Stupid question about how much smoke these things make stock

2007 5.9

Otherwise stock as far as I know--bought the truck @ auction a few months ago.

Been noticing lately it smokes a good bit when you roll into the throttle on acceleration. Air filter is fine, fuel filter is fine, all the maintenance "stuff" is done.

Kinda dumb when it comes to the CR engines...wondering if they exhibit a good bit of smoke in stock form, or if there's something I need to be looking for?

By "a good bit" I mean it's enough for my 74 year old father to comment about how it looks like his old pumped up 444 Cummins....it's a cloud for sure.

Is this normal?

My truck with no power adders doesn't smoke,
slight haze. If I add timing with smarty, I
will smoke out the intersection, Tight converter
large sticks.

blkjack 12-19-2009 07:33 PM

I wouldnt think that they should smoke much at all. The ones that I have seen around here dont smoke except for a slight haze and also my 02 24V all stock cept for 4" turbo back and a bhaf just puts out alittle haze too. You might have a intercooler boot leaking or something like that. And any codes?

wardvwracer 12-19-2009 08:17 PM

Mine will toss out a decent cloud if I haven't leaned on it in a while and stand on it pretty good. Otherwise, its hardly noticable. If I do back to back pulls only the first one will leave a smog pattern.:tu:

wildbill 12-19-2009 09:32 PM

I'd look for a boost leak and check it for codes.

Mr. Miyagi 12-19-2009 09:56 PM

I plan on doing a CAC leak test in the morning. Will report the results.

was it a re-po? maybe someone had a programmer on it and didn't get to remove it before it got gone..... or they put in aftermarket sticks after the stockers took a crap....

does it feel :":faster:": than any other commonrail you have driven?

dangerous1965 12-19-2009 11:55 PM

Put some guages on it and see what it's doing!

ArizonaRedneck 12-20-2009 12:36 AM

Boosted- 12-20-2009 12:52 AM

Mine doesnt smoke at all.... :humm:

94Matt 12-20-2009 03:54 PM

My 06 would make a huge cloud of smoke when you got into it if it had been driven easy for a while before. I believe if you add the tube off the bottom of the airbox it will help with that. I never tried it on that truck, but had heard it would remedy the problem from others. My 03 does not smoke at all.

NadirPoint 12-20-2009 04:06 PM

My '07 smoked more stock than it does now with a Smarty Jr. on default SW1. Definitely had a good puff to it on the low end, stock.

Mr. Miyagi 12-21-2009 01:49 AM

CAC leak test....held 41psi for 2 hours and didn't lose anything.

It's beginning to look like the 04.5 and up trucks are smokers out of the box.

I will look into the airbox tube mod, thanks Matt! :c:

Of course this all depends....bought the truck for dad and he kinda likes the smoke now so WTF? :s:

If the injectors are worn, it will smoke worse...mine did.

Agree. Look at the possibility of an injector problem. How many miles did you say are on the truck?

midnite><og 01-03-2010 12:43 AM

hmmm. remmebe ri test drove one a while back... revved it, slammd it, and not much smoke at all... so no, shouldnt smke to much.. maybe it has a programmer/tune in it? any more info on the truck? privatley owned? why it was at auction?

hotlb7 01-03-2010 12:52 AM

41psi ! THAT AINT STOCK ... IT HAS TO BE TUNED.

RedRammer 01-04-2010 11:58 AM

My '06 doesn't smoke with just air and pipe mods. Even sorta stuck in the snow the other day and very little black on the snow and I was on it hard enough to flag the CEL. My old '04.5 would puff a bit if it was really humid out.
