NV5600 for towing only?
 

I have the NV5600 in my truck. I bought the truck with a standard and looked for almost a year for it because I love standard. Makes me feel like a more involved driver and closer to my truck. Anyways, from all the information I can gather they are basically slightly larger towing transmissions. Are they worth anything when racing? I would think they would do a little better considering they are a little larger. But shifting it seems long and cumbersome compared to my friends 5spd in his 01 2500. Did I buy a truck thats made for towing purposes or can I turn it into a quick machine able to possibly keep up with automatics and other race oriented transmissions? If I can't, then I will clean this one up real nice and just skip injectors, turbos, and all the other goodies, put a nice milage chip on it and make it my daily driver. Then find a nice 12v or second gen 24v and crank it up. Then of course get one for towing but I don't know what body style and engine to get for that yet. The 6spd is designed for towing end of story. The 5spd make a better race trans if you choose to go that route. But, for racing, you can't beat a quality built auto. If your going to sled pull then the manual trans is a better choice. Personally I'm with you, I'd rather have a manual trans. I had a 5spd in my 02 and it made for a better daily driver then my 06 with the 6spd. Now towing, the 6spd would run circle around the 5spd, too much of a drop from 5th to 4th or visa versa.

If your talking about racing at the track - speed shifting a NV5600 (or NV4500HD for that matter) will quickly lead to problems. Parts are getting to be hard to find. I wouldnt recommend it.

Some will undoubtedly argue, but 6 speeds are either towing machines or daily drivers.

Hahaha well I appreciate the input from you guys. So basically I bought a daily driver/towing truck and Im screwed on the track but if I want to do sled pulling and the like I would be ok? Even though this information makes me sad what do you guys think. Should I still upgrade the injectors and things like that to have more power and just not take it to the drags or should I just get some small injectors and a smarty junior and call it quits? The good news is I can buy sport models now with the auto trannys lol and wont have to spend all the money to do all the work to make it a sport.

I have a 6 speed 24V and auto 98 12V. For daily driving, the auto is good, but when winter comes and the roads turn bad I much prefer the standard - you just have a lot more control.

Youll likely be fine in the sledpull - but Im pretty sure you will have to upgrade the clutch and hydraulics etc.

i bang my nv5600 around pretty good and i
can shift it fairly fast. installing a short
throw would improve it that much more.

there are plenty of guys around that race
with the nv5600. it just makes it more
challenging.

Well then my mind has changed. I shall turn it into a monster sled puller and tower for later years. Any suggestions to get started in the direction of sled pulling? I was going for a racing set up but that went south. I want it to be driveable but good sled puller eventhough I dont know shit about it lol. I damn sure want to try it though! What should I do clutch, injector, turbo, and chip wise? Thanks guys!
