Input output shaft thinking
 

I have a question. Wouldn't it make sense to have a weak link in your drive line somewhere?say you upgrade your input shaft but not your output shaft. At least if the output shaft is the weaker link and it breaks you know what it is and it's easy and cheaper to fix than say an input shaft or a whole transmission. Does that have any authority or if you build your transmission right, will anything really break or ever have problems? Also since my tranny already has the upgraded 1-3/8 input shaft, should I buy a new one when I buy a new clutch? Thanks!

That is kind of the purpose of the original head bolts too. They act as a fuse. When your pursuing power the fuses get taken out.

and unless the splines are messed up on the shaft no don't buy a new one. You really don't want to replace it if you don't have to.

on the built autos they recommend leaving the stock output shaft for that exact reason. Not really sure what you'd do on a manual though.

If it were an automatic and you were build it it up then I would say intermediate shaft first then input then output shaft since they get easier and easier to replace(intermediate taking the most work) However most manuals don't have the problem with the input shafts breaking because its a lot harder to do things like boosted launches and the like.

I agree. Don't mess with that 1 3/8" input unless it is bad. You have to dis-assemble the whole trans to get it out. Special tools are required and some 'disposable' parts have to be replaced.

Now, to answer: I always thought the clutch was the 'fuse' for a manual . . . . :w2:
