got codes
so after my truck started acting up i did trany and engine service thinking it might be a dirty filter but that wasnt it so i decided to put a scanner on the truck and this is what poped up
p2509 p2609 can you guys tell me what these are and how i can go about fixing them and how much it would cost. would i be able to do it myself thanks in advanced |

I pulled those codes up on: myscantool.com The P2509 comes up as: ECM/PCM Power Input Signal Intermittent The P2609 comes up as: Intake Air Heater System Performance I don't know if those two are related but I would think of wiring / connections first. I think I would start with a visual inspection to see if there is any problems or damage anywhere. Look specifically for a wire being rubbed or cut. If that doesn't turn up anything, then I would start pulling connections apart and checking for corrosion and what not. While you are at it make sure all the wiring you can check is in good shape and that the connections are tight and clean. You can also do the battery cables (Both ends!). I'm thinking this might be a wiring problem that is causing voltage problems to the computer. If the voltage is off somewhere in the system, you can get all sorts of weird / intermittent problems! One place to check is near the starter. Just above it and in front of it is a 12 ga or so wire that might have been rubbed in the metal bracket there. The other common problem area to 3rd gen trucks is A/C sensor near the compressor. You can see this wire from underneath the truck. If it is rubbed bare and partially shorting to metal, it will drag down the sensor 5v supply and cause all sorts of strange things to occur. If you find any damage like that just get it sealed up and protected. Hopefully that should cure it for you!! Do you know when your grid heater is on? If you have noticed the relay clicking it on and back off before you start the truck. Also, after you start it, you will notice the voltage drop as it cycles for a while after you have started the engine. If you have noticed this before, is this operating normally? What else is the truck doing differently from what it normally does or that it shouldn't do or? |
intake air heater sounds like a Mass Airflow Sensor, so i would look on the intake duct and find the sensor and clean that to fix that problem, if the problem persists i would replace the sensor. And Millco's right. i know with some land rovers, if battery terminals are dirty and voltage is variating, it messes with the computer. could be the same for your truck. clean the terminals and clear the codes, either with a scantool or just unhook the batteries for like 10 minutes.:U:

The intake air heater is what the cummins has instead of glow plugs, its a plate between the intake elbow and the manafold.

Diagnostic Test
1. INTAKE AIR HEATER OPEN Measure the resistance between the intake air heater supply and ground terminal on each intake air heater. Is the resistance less than 10 Ohms? Yes >> Go To 2 No >> Replace the open Intake Air Heater. Perform POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST VER - 1 (DIESEL). (Refer to 8 - ELECTRICAL/ELECTRONIC CONTROL MODULES/ENGINE CONTROL MODULE - DIAGNOSIS AND TESTING) 2. INTAKE AIR HEATER GROUND OPEN Measure the resistance of the intake air heater ground circuit between the intake air heater terminal and the intake manifold cover ground connection. NOTE: The intake air heater circuit is grounded through a conductive gasket on the top and bottom of the air heater (grey colored gaskets). Is the resistance less than 10 Ohms? Yes >> Go To 3 No >> Repair the open Intake Air heater ground or replace both heater gaskets with the proper conductive gaskets.. Perform POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST VER - 1 (DIESEL). (Refer to 8 - ELECTRICAL/ELECTRONIC CONTROL MODULES/ENGINE CONTROL MODULE - DIAGNOSIS AND TESTING) 3. OPEN BATTERY CABLE FROM INTAKE AIR HEATER RELAY Measure the resistance of the battery cable between the intake air heater and the intake air heater relay for both intake air heaters. Is the resistance less than 10 Ohms? Yes >> Go To 4 No >> Repair The open or high resistance battery cable from the intake heater relay to heater. 4. BATTERY CABLE OPEN
Measure the resistance of the battery cable between the battery and the intake air heater relay for both relays. Is the resistance less than 10 Ohms? Yes >> Go To 5 No >> Replace the battery cable from the battery to the Intake Air Heater Relay. Perform POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST VER - 1 (DIESEL). (Refer to 8 - ELECTRICAL/ELECTRONIC CONTROL MODULES/ENGINE CONTROL MODULE - DIAGNOSIS AND TESTING) 5. #1 INTAKE AIR HEATER RELAY Disconnect the #1 intake air heater relay signal wire. Connect a jumper wire from the signal terminal of the #1 intake air heater relay to battery positive. Did the relay click when 12 volts was applied? Yes >> Go To 6 No >> Replace #1 Intake Air Heater Relay. Perform POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST VER - 1 (DIESEL). (Refer to 8 - ELECTRICAL/ELECTRONIC CONTROL MODULES/ENGINE CONTROL MODULE - DIAGNOSIS AND TESTING) 6. #2 INTAKE AIR HEATER RELAY Disconnect the #2 intake air heater relay signal wire. 1. POOR CONNECTIONS AT THE BATTERIES Visually inspect the wiring at the battery for damaged wires, or corrosion. Are the connections tight and free of corrosion? Yes >> Go To 2 No >> Repair the poor connections at the batteries. Perform POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST VER - 1 (DIESEL). (Refer to 8 - ELECTRICAL/ELECTRONIC CONTROL MODULES/ENGINE CONTROL MODULE - DIAGNOSIS AND TESTING) 2. LOW BATTERY VOLTAGE Measure the voltage between the positive and negative posts of the batteries. Is the battery voltages both above 12 volts? Yes >> Go To 3 No >> Recharge or replace the battery (s). Perform POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST VER - 1 (DIESEL). (Refer to 8 - ELECTRICAL/ELECTRONIC CONTROL MODULES/ENGINE CONTROL MODULE - DIAGNOSIS AND TESTING) 3. OPEN FUSED B+ TO ECM Turn the ignition off. Disconnect the ECM harness connectors. Turn the ignition on. Measure the resistance between the positive battery post and the ECM supply circuits. Is the resistance less than 10 Ohms? Yes >> Go To 4 No >> Repair the open fused B+ circuit to ECM. Perform POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST VER - 1 (DIESEL). (Refer to 8 - ELECTRICAL/ELECTRONIC CONTROL MODULES/ENGINE CONTROL MODULE - DIAGNOSIS AND TESTING) 4. OPEN GROUND CIRCUIT Measure the resistance between the negative battery post and the ECM ground circuits. Is the resistance less than 10 Ohms? Yes >> Go To 5 No >> Repair the open ground circuit. Perform POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST VER - 1 (DIESEL). 6. RETURN CIRCUIT SHORTED
Measure the resistance between the ECM return circuits and all other circuits in the ECM harness connector, except other return circuits. Is the resistance greater than 100k Ohms? Yes >> Go To 7 No >> Repair or replace the engine harness. Perform POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST VER - 1 (DIESEL). (Refer to 8 - ELECTRICAL/ELECTRONIC CONTROL MODULES/ENGINE CONTROL MODULE - DIAGNOSIS AND TESTING) 7. BATTERY + SHORTED TO GROUND Measure the resistance between the ECM B+ supply circuits and ground. Is the resistance greater than 100k Ohms? Yes >> Refer to the INTERMITTENT CONDITION Symptom (Diagnostic Procedure).
