03-08 owners sign in whats the best year
Whats the best Year slushbox (auto) third gen? I have heard theat the 03s get the best milage. I know they may have bad injectors but not worried about that cause Would change them to Don Ms F1 ASAP.
Thinking about trading my 02 for the comfort of a four door quick steering quiet 3rd gen.
any other bugs with 03s or 04s
I guess im fishing for a time line of the diffrent changes and quirks of the 3gen 5.9 series
I am quite knowledgeble on the VP pumped 2nd gens but ignorant to anything newer...

all of the cr trucks run good the 03 and some of the 04 were only 305 hp and the 04.5 to 07 were 325hp. injectors don't go bad unless you have over 100,000 miles on them. 03 and 04 have the same lift pump mounted on the engine like the vps. some of the 03 have a 47re and some have the 48re tranny. as far a mpg I think they all get around the same.
I love my 07... I haven't had any engine problems I think the interior and the newer front end look better than the early 3rd gens. My 07 is getting 19 mpg and I'm running my smarty in the higher power levels... But my friend has an 04 with the HO and he has 130k on it and still hasn't had any problems since he bought it.
03-04 had best piston design for bombing, can take the heat better, and they didn't have the post injection event for emissions. There are alot of really high power 05's for some reason, nobody really knows why, but the early 05's came with plastic intercoolers so watch out for that. Biggest thing with a common rail is add another fuel filter @ 2 micron, the factory 7 micron is not enough to protect the injectors.
completley happy with my 04.5. nothing really wrong with it around 75 K now. only problems seem to come from me
i love the way it handles and runs, and i really love the 4 door. i wasn't real crazy about it when i got it, but it has been great for kids and wife, and dogs, and freinds that seem to have a rough night out

yeah not having the tripple ingections each turn has got make a diff on mileage. I surely could care less about the extra noise. Isn't there TsT or some kind of box that can remove the pre and post injections? Seems like longer duration is good and high rail pressure is bad is this right?
I believe the Smarty takes out the last injection cycle. I also believe that injection cycle was designed to heat up the Cat to get it burning.
Pre injection raises cyl. temps prior to combustion, so I kinda think that is a good thing... more complete burn, better economy and power.
As far as your other questions:
Draining the rail (Dropping rail pressure) is bad. Nothing wrong with a little extra pressure on the rail, but go too high, you'll pop the pressure relief, hopefully before you crack an injector. Some people just run a plug in place of the one time use pressure relief. They usually monitor rail pressure with a gauge (Not a bad idea anyway)
Too much timing on these motors is also bad. I think the later models come with some timing in them already, because some of the earlier trucks can take more timing than the later models can.
My experience has been that these trucks seem to hold up to higher EGT's than others.
Constantly hear stories of EGT's that would melt earlier models.
If bombing the truck is in your future, start with the Transmission!!
The 2007 5.9L is what I have and am very happy with it.
I would think an 2006 would also be a good choice. Much older than that, you might as well keep your 2002, Right?...
