Problem With Tach on 06 Cummins ?

I'm having problem with the tachometer on my truck. just the other day at idel it was reading about 500 to 700 rpms( which is normal). well here lately it started wanting to run about 200 rpms idel and and at normal 60mph crusine speed its about a grain and sometimes lower. anyone have any ideas what could be the problem? by thy the wy the truck is running fine to so i don't know if its a sensor or guage problem.

mikeshauling 06-03-2009 09:56 PM

Holy hard to read batman... someone will chime in with a suggestion for ya.

MRaynor 06-03-2009 10:41 PM

I would say that you either have a connection problem somewhere or a faulty RPM gauge.

Red_Rattler 06-04-2009 12:13 PM

This is a problem on almost all 06's... Nothing a new cluster won't fix... If your truck is still under warranty get it to the dealer fast!

silvercummins06 06-04-2009 03:08 PM

I bought my truck 2nd hand and it has about 87,ooo but not hurt but i know it has the 100 thousand powertrain warrenty on it. would it fall under that warrenty?

RSWORDS 06-04-2009 04:49 PM

Mine is doing the same damn thing

sidekick 06-04-2009 06:04 PM

check the service bulletin for service techs might be a recall

silvercummins06 06-04-2009 08:54 PM

thanks guy. also it isn't going to hurt the truck performance other than not knowing the rpm's i'm running?

Red_Rattler 06-04-2009 08:57 PM

Nah, the truck is smart enough not to be past redline long if your hammering on it.

silvercummins06 06-04-2009 09:02 PM

who would i check with to see if there a recall besides the dealer?

---AutoMerged DoublePost---

also where would i check for the service bulletin at? is it on dodge's web page or this site?

Red_Rattler 06-04-2009 09:17 PM

I'm almost 100% sure this is not a recall item... But it should be! :bat:

sidekick 06-04-2009 09:26 PM

alldatadiy.com might have them i know the alldata that u pay for does but not sure the diy site

silvercummins06 06-05-2009 07:28 AM

thanks ! Ill check it out.:U:

RSWORDS 06-05-2009 08:52 AM

I've looked into this before, no recall as of yet.

silvercummins06 06-27-2009 05:23 PM

hey guys just to let you know i took the speed sensor (crank sensor) off and clean the face of it. after reinstalling it the sensor, the tachometer begin work and responding much better than before. Before hand it wouldn't move unless you really got on it. Now when you hit the gas it move with the responds of the motor. Tt only for the first couple of miles it will read about 200 to 500 rpm off then it reads right on the money. I'm going to buy a new sensor and let ya'll know how it does.

Noplugs 08-12-2009 08:04 PM

if anyone finds something on this issue please pm me. the dealer said it was fine. trust me when the needle is sitting on the backside of the peg then there is some sort of an issue. but i just drive it everyday what do i know.:ouch:

MIne is still f-ed up....

dontneedtostroke 01-10-2011 01:01 AM

mines been like this since there was 10,000miles on it, be nice to see the needle on the right side after 3yrs...

07redsled 01-12-2011 05:35 PM

my dads 06 started doing this last year its been reflashed new dash new sensor and still reads 300 rpm idle and is 700 or slow low as it sweeps . why couldnt they just keep the p pumps and say the hell with the computers

pngmotoman 01-12-2011 05:49 PM

mine does this also. i would love to know what rpm I'm at seeing as I'm a 6 speed now

07redsled 01-12-2011 06:01 PM

g56 right ? its about 700 rpm higher at 60
my 48re was 1600 rpm at 60
g56 2100 or so at 60

pngmotoman 01-15-2011 03:23 PM

nv5600 decided i wanted the case iron instead

coors_man_2005 10-06-2011 09:44 PM

any more info guys

minncountryboy 05-19-2012 05:07 PM

Yup my 06 just started to do this now.. might check into the crank sensor.. and or gauge cluster. We shall see

Rok Herman 06-21-2012 03:22 PM

Hi there guys,

I do not have cummins, but I do have 1500 06 hemi and It's doing exactly same thing. I was reading on obd2 app and I saw normal 650rpm idle on obd2 and at same time 300 at tachometer :D So I suppose crack sensor is ok... I really don't know what to do... and yes, at over 1100rpm it reads ok. Oh last time cruise control stopped working until engine restart...

I have really no clue what is going on :O

darkknight06 11-29-2012 12:23 PM

I have a 2006 2500 Dodge Mega cab, 5.9 HO and the tach has been doing the same thing, readying low until I get on it down the highway. Has anyone had sucess with changing the crank sensor and fixing the tach problem?

minncountryboy 11-29-2012 03:41 PM

Last time I talked to the stealership they said it was the gauge cluster its self and it the have to put it in cause the panel needs to be flashed.. and theres a core charge so they can rebuild your old one.

seafish 01-05-2013 03:12 PM

All of these tach problems you guys are having are very common on the 2006 trucks.

The problem is directly linked to bad solder joints on the back of the cluster itself.
They CAN be repaired if you know what to look for and how to "flow" repair an existing solder joint. Somewhere on a forum a guy posted up some great pics of his solder repairs...I'll try to find a link. Otherwise, you are looking to send the unit into a "speedometer" service repair or buy a new cluster. CHrysler must have had a VERY large, bad run of these clusters in 2006, becuase the problem is extremely common.

minncountryboy 01-05-2013 07:59 PM

Ya n the messed up part is the cluster in the 06 is only for 06, and also my cargo lights quit working and the stealership said that it linked the the cluster which is retarded. So im just gonna replace the cluster and if my cargo lights still dont work then im replacing the headlight switch also. They turn on when unlock my dorrs with my auto start but dont work with the button.. kinda irritating

Mega-Ram 01-05-2013 10:11 PM

Tach problem

Replace crank sensor on mine same thing reads normal when it wants to, read post on solder my be the problem on the cluster, my banks iQ screen always shows the correct rpm so it's not the sensors, might just replace whole cluster...:humm:

seafish 01-05-2013 11:00 PM

Here is a link to a thread on CF--

06 tach issues - Page 3 - Dodge Cummins Diesel Forum

And here is a short PDF that has pics of the screws that need to removed and of what IC's to "reflow" on the back of the cluster.

http://www.keepandshare.com/doc/3998...eg?da=y&dnad=y

Please know that I have not needed to do this repair on my 2005 (knock wood), but if I ever do have an issue, it is what I am going to do. Basic mechanical, and more importantly decent soldering skills, are necessary, but it is a relatively easy fix, and certainly the cheapest fix, for the tach problems that you guys are having.

wera72 02-22-2013 02:47 PM

Same problem intermittently on my 04.5

jond09 04-03-2013 09:24 AM

I have an 06 with same crazy tach issues. Pulled my cluster out and just hit all the leads with a solder iron on those ic's. Tach has worked perfect ever since. Ive done countless hours of forum searching on this issue. This was by far the easiest fix. And it was free, and only takes an hour or so maybe. After all my research I would imagine this would fix 90% or more of all these tach issues.

---AutoMerged DoublePost---

Also do not over tighten the little screws that hold it all together, the board might warp slightly. That other forum suggested shimming the right side to keep it flat. But I just very lightly tighten the screws back. Worked for me.
