Check Engine Light came on

I've been searching on here for a little while and can't find the answer to my question. I know there are a lot of posts like this but I need help so here goes:
Truck threw a CEL this morning. First time ever at 38,600 miles. I changed the oil and fuel filter (Baldwin filter) on Friday, this morning was the third time I started it since changing the filter and it threw the light. It was about 55 degrees here this morning, the grid heater came on, I started the engine, it died, started right back up, threw the light. Went ahead and drove down the road, ran fine, no problems.
My only mods are Afe intake, 5" turbo back exhaust, and Quadzilla mileage module with boost fool. I am running Power Service in my fuel in every other tank.
I did the key flip thing, no codes show up in the odometer area but the CEL flashes 10 times. This is my first go at the CEL thing so I'm dumb.
Please help!

Stop by Autozone and get your truck scanned for codes

Check the codes. You can buy a cheap code reader/code eraser for $60 from Harbor Freight (a good investment).

If it was an 03-04, I'd say classic lift pump failure symptoms. But the 05+ aren't affected the same way by a lift pump failure...

Y'all say check the codes but what does the key flip thing do? Won't that bring up codes? I don't get any codes from doing that check. Didn't think about the Harbor Freight scanner. I'll get one of those, you're right, good investment.
The first thing I thought was lift pump but at 38k miles?

steved 10-20-2008 01:14 PM

I think the key flipping only tests the dash, doesn't do anything for codes.

I thought lift pump, but yours is in the tank...

Need to scan for the codes

MegaMan 10-23-2008 06:05 PM

O.k. I bought a scanner and checked it out. One code: P0191 - fuel rail pressure. Everybody pretty much said the same thing: lift pump BUT then said that the 06 is in the tank, which it is. Guess it's time for a fuel pressure gauge. Could this have just been a fluke after I changed the fuel filter or is my lift pump going out at 38k miles?
I cleared the CEL, will see if it stays off, guess that will answer my question.
I want to know about how to install a fuel pressure gauge, I'll start a new thread.

Clear it and see if comes back...

They make a fuel filter cap that is drilled and tapped for a sending unit...

DB Admin 10-23-2008 06:13 PM

Probably from when you changed your fuel filter

MegaMan 10-23-2008 08:24 PM

Steved, tell me more about the fuel filter cap, where can I find it?

DB Admin 10-23-2008 08:46 PM

Try

Dodge Cummins and Ford Power Stroke Diesel Truck Accessories - Geno's Garage

Good stuff over at Geno's but I was just readin in an older post where someone was sayin that you had to notch the filter cap since the new requirement for the 7micron filters, that make any sense?

06 DIESEL 10-24-2008 06:42 AM

I have never heard of having to notch anything as far as fuel filters go.

I know we've kinda been all over the place on this thread but back to my original subject: the CEL. I cleared the P0191 code and put about 120 miles on today with no light and no problems. Must have just picked up the code after I changed the fuel filter.:U:

mine throws that code too when i turn on the defueling setting on my bullydog. i think the computer is sensing a change in fuel rail pressure cuz your computer is telling it to send more fuel than the stock fuel pump can keep up with. i wouldn't worry about it too much if you keep it off the floor, but might want to look into a aftermarket fuel pump to be safe.

My 04.5 threw a code at me and began acting up. It was kind of random at first but got worse. It would cough and sputter and smoke like hell at startup and die half the time. Sometimes die after restart ot need to be cranked a lot. I replaced the fuel filer and the problem got better but persisted to a lesser degree. The problem went away in a couple weeks after that. I had just bought the truck and the previous owner didnt maintain it like he said he did, filter was black
