What Exactly Does This Do??????

Intake Transfer Pump.

Mine is at the dealership with a bad one and it is on national back order. :ouch: :argh: From what the advisor said, it has something to do with building up fuel pressure and feeding it to the engine. Anybody know anything else about em?

mikmaze 09-09-2008 04:42 PM

sounds more like an in tank transfer pump
pushes fuel from the tank to the high pressure pump.

DangerousDuramax 09-09-2008 04:46 PM

Rip that sucker outta there and getcha an AirDog Mikey. :up2:

MRaynor 09-09-2008 04:56 PM

I don't think that is it. They said the truck could still be driven and it wouldn't break down, I just wouldn't be getting all the fuel it should be getting. Seems if it was that, they would say don't drive or it will screw up the CP3.

MRaynor 09-09-2008 08:19 PM

You boys got me to thinking about this and I called the advisor back. It is actually some part on the engine that deals with fuel delivery. My in tank pump was fine. If it was that, I'm with you. I would have been ordering an Airdog tonight.

uuummmmm...Mike. The DURAMAX doesnt come with a lift pump and IT has a CP3. :w2:

staarma 09-10-2008 09:01 AM

There is no part on the engine that deals with fuel delivery. The in tank transfer pump sends fuel to the CP3 then the CP3 pressurizes it and sends it the rail where the injectors are. At the end of the rail is a rail pressure relief valve so the rail doesn't get over pressurized. Next, the unused fuel goes down the return and back to the tank. That's it.

The advisor may be confused as to the location of the pump. On 2003-2004.5 the pump was referred to as a lift pump and was mounted in the engine compartment on the back of the fuel filter canister.

DangerousDuramax 09-10-2008 09:37 AM

Yep, what he said. I dont think that advisor knows what he's talking about because there's no part of the engine that has anything to do with fuel delivery. I'm thinking he may be actually talking about the FCA on the CP3.

stkdram55 09-10-2008 09:43 AM

A tech....at a dealership.....not knowing what he is talking about.....naw couldnt happen:moon:

DangerousDuramax 09-10-2008 09:43 AM

lol

06 DIESEL 09-10-2008 04:32 PM

I know that our trucks will run without the in tank pump workign but it will shorten the life of the CP3. If I was you I would go ahead and order the Air Dog and when you get your truck back put it on there. Also, I would go to the dealership and have them point out the part that is bad to you, if they are so sure it is bad they should be able to point it out to you so you can know what actually is bad.

DangerousDuramax 09-10-2008 05:16 PM

No it wont. The DURAMAX has the exact same CP3 as the Cummins with NO lift pump and we've got 3 of them in our families freight company that have over 400K on them with no issues.

MRaynor 09-11-2008 09:09 AM

Well I got lucky and they found the part in Montana and it will be in today. :yeah: I will have the mechanic point it out to me when I pick it up. The advisor tried to get him on the phone with me, but he was busy.
I'll let ya'll know exactly what it was.

DangerousDuramax 09-11-2008 09:12 AM

So they didnt tell you if it was the FCA or not?

MRaynor 09-11-2008 01:32 PM

Apparently the advisor wrote it down wrong and told me wrong over the phone what it was. He meant intank not intake. He was going by what he thought due to him writing intake. :argh: You boys called that one. :U: It was covered under warranty since the truck only has 60k on it. But for reference, if your truck is out of warranty the thing is a little over $500 for a factory pump, so my advice is to go with the Air Dog or FASS it's only a few dollars more.

DangerousDuramax 09-11-2008 01:34 PM

Yep yep, mo betta. :up2:

staarma 09-11-2008 01:35 PM

They didn't soak you for the $100 deductible did they? That seems to be more and more common because they can't seem to be able to read the actual warranty benefits. If you did you need to get a refund and if not good on them for not being morons.

In any event, I'm glad you got it handled.

DangerousDuramax 09-11-2008 01:36 PM

Whats going on with the deductible?

MRaynor 09-11-2008 02:10 PM

Nope, no deductible. This is one five star dealership that has done an excellent job and has been great to deal with. I have had both trucks in there for warranty stuff and they have both times been extremely quick with getting the trucks in and fixing them and not just saying we can't find anything.
The dealership is Corwin in Fargo, ND. They also sell and service Honda, Toyota, and a couple others, that place is huge.

A lot of dealers have been charging a deductible because they didn't read the part that the fuel system is covered by the engine warranty at 100,000 or 5/6/7 years depending on what your literature says.

DangerousDuramax 09-11-2008 04:19 PM

Geez...I'm willing to bet that they did but they're pulling the scam to make an extra buck. :rolleyes2:

You can get a Glacier Diesel Walbro 392 kit for less than $500. Mine puts out a constant 20 psi.

usmc0681 10-07-2008 05:09 PM

My dealership didn't try and charge me with the deductible. And I was right at my limit at 98,000 when mine went out. Of course, they didn't inspire too much confidence in me when the service tech was writing up the order and one of their mechanics came and asked what was wrong. I told him that the lift pump went out. He asked how I knew. Told him that it pulled a P0230 (Transfer pump (lift pump) circuit out of range). He asked how I knew this. I told him (with hand motions turning key) on-off-on-off-on and read the codes on the odometer. He pointed to the engine and said 'you don't want that to be out, it's expensive.' Looked where he was pointing and replied 'your right, that's the CP3 injection pump, luckily for me it's the lift pump back here.' Not very awe inspiring. So, I have the in tank pump now and have had no issues. Next time it will be a Walbro or FASS.

I just bought an 04.5 and when i was looking at it i called a dealership close by and they said it only has 70k mile warranty on the powertrain? but then i also heard that they have 100k?? From what you wrote, it sounds like they are covering it if under 100k

---AutoMerged DoublePost---

or is it 70 on the drivetrain and 100k on the motor?

He could also get a GDP Walbro system, a GDP Raptor system, a Fuel Boss system, a RASP system, or a FASS system in addition to the AD. :tttt:

Uncle Bubba 12-06-2008 01:27 PM

Most shops won't sell the Walbro pumps anymore for diesel applications, including Glacier Diesel. The new ULSD didn't play well with the Walbro's.

I did not know that!! And that is said in my best Johnny Carson voice!!!!:ok1: I've been running my GDP Walbro now for over 2.5 years now with not one problem!!! Maybe it's because I put about 16oz. of 2 stroke oil in every tank!!! Thanks for the info though!!!:U:
