Wheel bearing replacement 03 2500

I need to replace the front wheel bearings on my 03 2500 and have seen that you can buy just the bearing or the entire assembly. I have also heard you have to buy the entire assembly and of course spend x10 the money compared to just a bearing for 6 bucks. So which way is it? can i just replace the bearing or do I have to replace the entire assembly?

Thanks,

You have to buy the assembly! No taking it apart! BUT after you replace it have fun trying too on the old one!

Hm

Will I need to take the axle nut off? If so what size is that 41mm?

Thanks,

u can buy either or...but u have to have seals to...once u pull it apart u need to inspect the races and inner bearing and what I also do is I use amsoil synthetic for all of my fluids..if you've never used it u will be amazed at the longevity it holds...

You are not buying the correct bearing for 6 bucks, that much is myth. There are 2 bearings on the unit hug and they are both sealed bearing and MUST be because there are no other seals on the back side. Front side you have to source the correct hub retainer seal or all is for naught.

To rebuild them will require clam shells and a press, they are press fit to the hub. When you buy hubs you get new ABS sensor and harness which is probably needed. When it is all said and done, unless you have the tools and experience and parts source you are better off buying the unit already assembled. Failure to assemble correctly, the wheel falls off at an inopportune time and bad things happen.

Just did my passenger side- have to buy the whole assembly. It wasn't terribly expensive about $120 from autozone with 3 year warranty. Axle nut is 3/4 in drive socket 1 11/16- tractor supply has them cheap. Along with that you'll need a BFH - impact gun or decent size cheater bar (I broke 2 craftsman ratchets doing mine). It's not difficult to do just requires some grunting and sweating!
