06 5.9 Overheating & High Idle

I was putting in an AEM intake a few days ago :tu: and noticed my overflow line from radiator to tank on firewall had a huge hole in it. In addition the tank on the firewall was empty- I installed Edge with Attitude about a week before and engine temps had been fine 185-195. Yesterday I noticed temps getting about 210 on my commute home( I thought was on the high side but normal for running edge). I went out to get some HOAT coolant - Temps got up to 230!! :td: Store was closed by the time I limped into the parking lot. When I put it in park it went to high idle as well? I had my vents turned off- I am not sure when the last time a flush was done on it. I purchased it in Oct with 170xxx- I now have 181xxx- Think a flush will take care of my problem? Dealer wants $140 which I thought was reasonable- Also my A/C has not been working- from what I have read some people say this is a related issue to engine temp. I have not driven it more than 20 miles since temps sky rocketed. Any thoughts would be appreciated!

I was thinking about doing the flush myself- is it pretty easy to do? I'm comfortable working on vehicles- looks as simple as unhooking lower radiator hose - draining- rehook hose- fill with radiator cleaner & water- turn on truck till warm- drain from lower hose- run the hose through it for about 15 mins- reconnect hose and fill from overflow can on firewall- sound right?

A flush is not going to fix a heating problem. First make sure the system is full of coolant and bled. With the hole in the line it may be low. Next step would be change the thermostat, us a Cummins stat or pay the price.

Flushing should be done with distilled water, never tap water. You will need 20-25 gallons to do it correctly. Just keep looking at the drained water until it comes clean.

Stupid question- could my radiator cap be on too tight? I remember tightening it up with the palm of my hand and I remember it have a little wiggle before- I know it's a pressurized system so it needs to breathe at some point

No, cap could be to weak and venting when it should not but never too tight.

Draining fluid from the radiator it was coming out real slow until I backed off the radiator cap 1/4 turn. It started flowing really good then- I'll fill it up with HOAT in the morning and warm it up to see what it heats up too
