Cummins fuel economy

Hi I just bought a 2004 Dodge cummins 5.9 with only 115000 km on just wondering how many km guys are getting on a tank of diesel. I'm only getting about 600 km in winter that bombing around town with a little highway but feel like I should be getting better. Even put in a smarty jr. Thanks

South Texas Goat 12-22-2014 08:59 PM

600km on a tank? so about 12mpg... I am getting 16-17 mpg / 26.5 kmpg

Low_Life_Style 12-23-2014 11:48 AM

on winter fuel im at 19.2 currently with exhaust and smarty jr. has your fuel filter, oil, oil filter, air filter all been changed?

dieseldean 12-23-2014 07:47 PM

I've done as good as 24 mpg. Have to keep the rpm at or below 2000. A good, hot tune gives me the best mileage, as long as I keep my foot out of it. If all the driving is done on the interstate, it'll go 650 miles between fill ups. my upgrades are; Hamilton cam, 60 horse injectors, AFE cold air intake, 4" exhaust from the turbo back, Edge e-z, Airdog 150, and Industrial Injection phat shaft turbo.
Play with it a bit- intake, exhaust and good fuel filtering are a must. :c:

12mpg does seem lower than usual but then again if around town you are constantly stopping and going I can see that number easy. It's a heavy truck to stop and then to get moving again and you have 6 tires opposed to 4. what size tires are you running? If they're oversize you'll see about 1.5mpg less per inch added over stock. What rpm are you shifting at? I see about 15 in city- 18 ish hill country driving with 33's

Dan7769 01-08-2015 09:07 AM

It's not a dually just 4 wheels I only got 33 inch tires on there too. So I don't have a clue

CountryGirl91 01-20-2015 09:36 AM

I've gotten 24 MPG (HAND-CALCULATED!)...but this was doing 60 MPH on interstate for three hours.
My average range is 16-18 MPG normally. That's a mix of heavy right-foot, some trailer-pulling, and the rare slow, easy days. I rarely drive through city spots, though.

Lawrence D. Sanders Sr 01-24-2015 01:04 AM

I'm pulling about 22.8 MPG at 65 MPH with cruise control on. That's with the 80 psi cold tires inflated to 70 psi. In town about 17.5 to 18.5.

35 Lightning 01-25-2015 12:06 PM

The 33 inch tires definitely hurt mileage.
My 05 is bone stock, get 19-20 highway running 65-70, if I drive hard it does 16-17.5, so how do you drive it.

Wildman4x4nut 02-20-2015 12:49 AM

Dang all of you are getting way better than I am. I have a 06 3500 on 35" tires and I get 350 a tank which is 12 MPG.

Regcabguy 02-21-2015 09:03 PM

The 35's aren't helping. More wind resistance and weight.
I average combined 14.2 mpg with my popup on all the time and 34" 285-75-17's.
My Smarty on sw#7 default gained me 3/4 mpg over other tunes.
You might want to find a used Smarty Sr. Many are for sale with '06+ users going to EFI Live which isn't available for yours. it'll make the truck a lot more fun to drive. Just watch the go pedal.

Wildman4x4nut 02-21-2015 10:25 PM

Yes I know the 35" tires aren't helping any. I'll be honest I have never had any of my trucks get better than 16 MPG.
My 06 came with the 35's on it and I would hate to go smaller so I guess I'll just have to regear at some point.
Smarty on my truck?? Nope sorry but I'll get out and push before I'll ever run anything made by them. I had some bad run-ins with Bob and a few others and just won't run their junk.
I thought EFI Live was available for my truck now? I guess I misread something somewhere.

Maybe Edge then. My friend has the Edge Evolution I guess on his '05. It seems to be doing the job.
Some guys are running 285-305- 18's. Height without width.
With my early G-56 and 0.79 final drive I've got the equivalent of an auto and 4:10's. With my camper, the gearing works well.
I had one of the earliest Smarty's for the G-56 which produced a CEL. Marco had a fix in 24 hrs. That and updating has been my only contact w/Bob.
An Autocal might be next as I don't have the savvy for the V2.
Once you go that route, the tuner belongs to the truck.

Wildman4x4nut 02-21-2015 11:36 PM

I've had a Edge on my 01 and a H&S Black Maxx on my 08. The 8 would pull the moon back into orbit if it had a chance. That thing was amazing. I had deleted all the emissions crap off of it and it ran so good. The guy who bought it thought I had put new sticks into it because of the power it made.
I really haven't had the funds to mess with my 06 so have just been waiting. My first order is going to be a better tranny. Then I'll move on with the power adders. I really want to supercharge it and then add a turbo to make 700HP.

CumminsCoalRoller24/7 02-24-2015 10:57 AM

I recently picked up an edge with attitude for $150 on Craigslist- power setting are more than what I was expecting and the attitude unit is nice- can display 4 different gauges at a time- install was easy. My mileage has increased by 2mpg and that was on 5x5 so I was blowing quite a bit of smoke. It has low boost fueling options which are nice and can change on the fly. be sure you get the unit specific for your model- if there is one as cheap as I found it's a no Brainer!

Bigg Redd 02-24-2015 05:20 PM

Those 35s certainly hurt mileage for sure. What is your rear end gear ratio? If your truck is lifted, that too will hurt your fuel mileage.

el segundo 03-07-2015 01:27 AM

I'm lucky to get 19 MPG but I attribute that to the 410 rear end

keepitreal 03-17-2015 02:36 PM

Look at your IAT sensor. 4 wires. Clip the black and red wire and connect (JOIN) the computer end with the blue wire, Do not clip the blue wire. (the blue is your boost reading)
This will give the computer an OHM reading wether the actual intake temp is higher or lower. The hotter the actual air temp the more complete burn = better MPGs but a small power loss..... but the computer defuels when IAT snesor temps read hot. So when you do this, you trick the comp into supplying the same fuel for say 90 air but the motor is actually getting say 140 air which burns all that fuel enstead of blowing it out your tail pipe in the form of black smoke.... equalling better economy but a little less powa.

wristpin 03-25-2015 12:33 PM

With the big skins, have you RECALIBRATED the speedo to read the rolling dia ?

akhappyjack 03-25-2015 05:18 PM

2006 ram crew cab diablo programmer 4" magnaflow exhaust turbo back 32" tires air dog 100 1/2 lines and stand pipe IF i keep my foot out of it 21 mpg freeway driving, now with a trailer about 18 mpg

CumminsCoalRoller24/7 04-29-2015 09:53 PM

Wild man are you calculating for the extra mileage your odometer is off? Running 35s your trip dial Is off about 12% from stock- 350 miles/28 gallons= 12.5mph vs 350 miles x1.12 = 392 miles /28 gallons = 14mpg - not great but better!
