05 start difficulty

I've got an 05 cummins with 126,000 miles. It's got a 4" turbo back exhaust and air raid cai. The first few months I had it starting was no problem at all and when I got into it pretty good I could throw a good cloud of black smoke. Now starting has became difficult and all the smoke is gone. I changed the fuel filter and oil today. Went with mopar filters and rotella t6 synthetic. Any advice greatly appreciated!

Start with a lift pump fuel volume test and follow with a scan tool watching rail pressure pids for issues. Might follow those with retorque on the connector tubes and a return rate test.

Who could do something like that? There isn't a lot of diesel mechanics near me. The only thing close are a few dealerships.

Any local shop should be able to help. Make sure they have access to an information service and seem well versed in diagnostics procedures then request the test I described and they'll give you results (if they don't know diesel diags that is, if they do they should be fine on their own)
