Default Front pinion

So my 05 started making some noise in 4wd sitting our last snow storm. I figured it was u joint in the front shaft but to my surprise I found that the front pinion had a lot of play on it. I pulled the yoke and the rear bearing looks ok but I has definitely got an issue. Ate bearings a common issue on these?

We've done a handful of front pinion bearings and pinions in them.

It's been a while so I figgured I would let tall no what i found. After taking it appart and inspecting every thing found that the crush sleeve had never been crushed and the bearings were not touching the races all of the time. The bearing looked perfect . I'm at a loss , put new bearings in it l, crushed the collar and went on about my day
