The four inch does NOT sound crappy at all straight piped. It actually sounds mean as hell. I ran that before I got my stacks and still have 4" until the Y pipe under the bed and then it goes to 5". On top of that 5" is not needed until you start getting into the more than 500 hp range, it is just not necessary. Let me see if I can find an old video of mine idling then going into gear and I will let you decide.

5" sounds just like a semi. I had mbrp 5" straight piped and it sounded mean; especially the downspool of the turbo! But I admit, t was just too loud for me. And I felt bad for the old people and minivans next to me that lost their hearing when I flew by! It was hard for me to hear on the phone. I went down to silverline 4" duals and like the sound. Not too loud but still good.

man even a straight piped stock pipe is loud as hell on a 3rd gen, one of my co-workers got called in all the time because people thought he was driving the hell out of that thing the truck it was so loud.

and a 5 inch gives it a nice low rumble but the drone on a 3rd gen is crazy on freeway speeds.

I agree with all of the above. I ran 4" straight pipe on my 04.5 and it was crazy loud and didnt sound the greatest. You will also lose low end.
I have a thread I started about my exhaust that will explain all of my findings.

TEXASPOWER 04-15-2008 07:32 PM

patriot2500 04-16-2008 06:18 AM

Sweet do you have any pics?

Luvnacummins 04-16-2008 05:02 PM

4" is raspy... 5" straight will rattle your teeth loose trust... :argh: I don't know how anyone can hack that... I did for about 6 hours and had a muffler on order... :rocking:

TEXASPOWER 04-16-2008 06:21 PM

I lasted about the same amount of time as luvn did. had a 24" long 5"in/5"out resonator, removed that when i did the stacks and OMG. called my buddy who owns an exhaust shop and told him i was on the way. pulled into the bay and 30minutes later had the resonator installed and sounds sweet now. I can actually hear myself think.

3rd gens sound like junk no matter what exhaust size untill you put a 2nd gen exhaust manifold on them

straight pipes

i have an 06 with the stock pipe on there. i ran into a lotta trouble when i tried to get my straight pipes passed in the inspection but it only took a few exrtra bucks to pass it. and no, straight pipes on the 4" do not sound bad at all, its lloud enough for me

silvrcummns 09-25-2008 01:01 AM

my old 5" systemt was loud even with a free flowing muffler. when i switched to my 4" silverline to 5" stacks it got super loud. already got in trouble with cops for having it but they let me go because they thought it was cool that they heard me from 3 blocks away. i personally like the sound but it is a tad loud for in town driving.

oh and i majorly disagree with the guy who says 3rd gens sound like crap

4" w/ muffler & smarty on 5 @ idle

5" straight pipe w/ Smarty on 5 on dyno run

We've done almost everything from stock to 5" straight pipe w/ a side dump. I'm happiest w/o the muffler and every time he puts one on the truck I make him cut it back out.
