Changing Trans Fluid?
To change the fluid, do I just drop the pan and let it drain out then change the filter and fillit back up? Do you know how many quarts I will need to refill?
|
That is one way to do it. It's easier, but you're only getting about 1/2 the old fluid out. Looks like you might need about 8qt to do that.
Or you can do a full flush. Some do themselves, but not me...again. I'll take my so someone. For a full, 15qt should do it. |
My ATS torque converter has a plug, and I have the Mag Hytec Double-Deep pan.
When I do a fluid & filter change, I can easliy get about 18 quarts out of it. :) |
Mine took 6.5 qt's when they dropped the pan and installed a new filter even though Dodge said it would only take 4 qt's.

I have the Mag Hytec Double-Deep pan and it has a drain plug. With the stock pan remove all but 2-3 of bolts from one Conner. Then loosen them up slow and the fluid will drain out of opposite conner. If you do it slow it won't make too much of a mess. If I remember correctly, it takes 6 qt. but I always buy a few extras to have on hand.
NEVER EVER have a flush done. Very few shops know how to do it correctly. Only my .02 |
if your truck has high or hard miles on it.......here is a ***WARNING***........if you have someone do a complete flush and refill on it with a new filter, expect to have to change the filter within a week or so again cause that flush and fresh fluid breaks alot of the old stuck together particles and crap loose from your tranny case and other surfaces and your new filter catches all of them and plugs it up, its always best to do a "double change" on a tranny that has had a long change interval or that has had a hard life...........2 tranny fluid changes are alot cheaper than a new tranny......

I would agree with the above two - a 30 year tranny guy told me never to flush. Just drop the pan and change it regularily (even better if youve got an aftermarket converter with a drainplug)

good things to know!
