Common Rail blow by

I have a 2007 cummins that has a decent amount of blow-by every now and then. Sometimes I see it and sometimes it is almost non-existent. Besides ring wear is there anything else that could possibly cause this issue? It runs like a top and I maintain regular service myself. I really don't think it is rings because I have no other problems except maybe a couple hard starts here and there when the grid heater doesn't cycle (due to warm enough weather).

Have you had your oil tested?

No, never thought about it. What would they be looking for? And what are you thinking they are looking for?

The most likely thing in this scenario would be fuel dilution. If you have blow by you likely always have blow by. Maybe the ccv system is partially restricted causing it to appear worse sometimes than others. I would find a good tech that's been around these trucks a while. That would be the most reasonable way to address you're issue.

well if you get an oil analysis it can tell you if you have high metal content in your oil, possibly indicating broken rings or pistons and such.

im about to have a leak down test done and a compression test because i have been dealing with some lost oil out my blow by tube. i had an oil analysis done and im showing high metal content.

They were all high? I've noticed with cr trucks wear metals run much higher when the rockers begin to gall. Creates high wear at the cam, tappets and rockers. Typically won't effect blow by that much unless it wipes the cam out. http://img.tapatalk.com/d/13/07/14/qe7ujemu.jpg

oh i thought you were asking for yourself, if you did the test......

my last test showed high, iron and copper and elevated titanium.
