New to Diesel

Yea its what it says. I'm new to diesel but I'm young and have fallen in love with my truck. I want to know everything worth knowing and what improvements are worth doing and what brands I should stick to.

Welcome to the diesel family! Be careful, diesels are cheap to hop up a little and very expensive to fix or hop up any more! Remember these rules:

1) Adding HP to the engine is relatively easy, but there are a lot of other systems that are not so readily willing to handle the increased horse power . . . like the transmission.
2) Adding the first bit of HP (tuner) is easy, try to be happy with that
3) If you add a tuner, add a Pyrometer . . . you need to watch your exhaust gas temperature or you can melt your motor (pistons, valves) down and ruin your engine
4) Diesels are VERY expensive to fix when you mess them up!

You can read some basic diesel information in the blog section on my website found:HERE

Beyond that, here is the basic process of upgrading your truck:

1) Exhaust System
2) Intake
3) Gauges (at least Pyro, generally Trans Temp and Boost pressure too)
4) Tuner (Smarty is arguably the cat's meow for the cummins)

Then, think for a while before going any futher, or turning that smarty up. Learn the limits of the transmission and other components on the truck and then proceed carefully from there. There are many on this site that can hook you up with the necessary parts and/or knowledge to get where you want to go.

Read lots, Learn Lots, and have fun! Oh, and remember, even though everyone on the forum has an 800-900HP truck, 450HP at the tires will place you pretty high on the list at most small town dyno days! :tu:

Gauges, fuel filtration, tranny.....then go nuts.

Read everything.....filter through the junk. Look through multiple forums.
