Default 2004 cummins ticking at idle

hey guys

I have a 2004.5 cummins with a tick at idle when warmed up. The truck has done this since i bought it and have always wandered what it is.

The truck only once it is warmed up makes a tick tick tick....and then will kind of go a way then randomly come back again at idle. If you rev the truck up a little, say 300 to 500 rpm it is unnoticeable. The truck has no DTC codes and runs smooth at any rpm. the only other symptom is while checking injector fuel line clamps i noticed there is an unusual pulse/vibration in rithim with the engine on injector line #1 the rest are smooth to touch.

The Truck is bone stock except for guages and a streight pipe. truck has never had a programer on it either.

That being said i was just curious if any of you guys knew what this is and if its serious or not.

thanks in advance

How many miles on your rig? When was the last time your valve lash was adjusted? How often do you use Injector cleaner(s)? When I first start my truck I too get a tick for about 30 secs to about a minute give or take several seconds, then it just goes away. Its been doing this for years.

Your truck is way overdue for a valve adjustment. Im certain that will help, plus you will likely pick up a few ponies and increase fuel mileage to boot. PS is good stuff!

If you can get access to a scan tool go in and shut off each injector one by one if it stops ticking on a certain injector while its off that is your problem cylinder. I would say its probably an injector tick. Once you narrow it down to an individual cylinder/injector. Swap that injector to a diff. cylinder and see if the tick follows the injector. If so replace it.
