buying my first diesel

Hey guys im not to bombers so forgive me if i seem a bit uneducated in the ways of the diesels. But im looking to get my first diesel truck and am leaning towards yours truely... a 3rd gen cummins. Theres 3 trucks im looking at, 1 a 03 2wd single cab with 129k miles on it for $10k that is amazingly clean. 2 a 04 quad cab 4x4 with 169000 miles for 14900$, and a 05 quad cab 4x4 with 178k miles for 14900$. Im not going to be doing much towing and when i do it will only be a old vw rabbit or quads. This will be my daily driver and i only have a 4 mile drive to work. I drive a duramax lb7 right now that is my work truck but hate how little it feels. So help me guys should i go with one of these? Or keep looking? And id hate to say itbut im open to the powerstrokes too...... thankfs

Depending on they guys you talk to you will receive different answers. Personally I like the 5.9L Cummins and the 7.3L powerstroke and I wont touch a duramax with a 30 foot pole...
Every truck has there pros and cons the cummins is a awesome and durable engine, but there flaws lie in the fuel system and transmission. Even though I have the originall transmission and have 245K on my truck and only issue was i had a bad ground for my TC one day fixed that and no more issue. You just have to change the fluid often and adjust the bands when you change the fluid. The quad cabs are not huge but to me them seem more than adequate. The fords have the biggest cabs untill you get into the dodge mega cabs. I would go test drive the one that will suite your needs the best, but I think you can knock down 2-4 grand off the price with a little negotiation.

The Ford 7.3L Power Strokes

I like them they have high end power and can pick up and go pretty good, but if it gets really cold where you are I would advoid em because they can be hard starting; because they use oil for the fuel injectors but they are a good engine none the less. I draw the line for international/ navistar engines at the 7.3L

Duramax.

Around here the new ones seem to stay on the road longer than the old ones... But at least the old ones are nice and warm in a shop...

I test drove the 2wd yesterday and it was great, love that with the 2wd i can get good mpg out of it. But the guy wont really budge on price, t was 10900 and he would only go 10200. Id like to pay 9500. I want to get something soon cause this dura is killing me lol:scare2:

well from the sounds of it your gonna use it to tow you 4x4 toys I assume that your gonna be at some places where 4x4 will be nice. my 98.5 gets 22 on the high way and 17-18 generally.

Ive looked into a few 2nd gen, its just crazy how much guys up here are asking for them. 12k for a 2nd gen with nearly 200k. Seems like there a little full of themselves. But the search continues. Whats the average going price for a clean 2nd gen? Seem pricey

RanchhandTCR 01-28-2013 08:30 AM

for a nice good 2nd gen with a 24 Valve around here with 130-150K is 14K-16K People are asking alot for them because people want to buy them instead of the new 6.7L with Def and DPF.. Espicially since the EPA just hammered everyone for deleate kits and prgrammers.

Goodness! They make it so difficult to drive a real truck, there pretty much forcing everyone to get little toyota 4 banger trucks. Heck i may have to be one of them:argh:

Don't rush it, people are buying the small pick-up truck, fuel prices keeps going up, People are worried about paying for their house:scare2: You'll find a good deal if you keep looking
