2004.5 Idle Concern

I was just wondering what the normal idle is for my cummins as far as highway speeds. It sits at about 2 grand rpms which to me seems a little high at 70 mph but it could be normal. I thought it might be something with the gearing. The tranny doesnt slip a hair so I didnt really think it was my trans but thats why I figured id ask someone who knows more about this kind of thing?

Thank you.

2 g's is dead on for 70

Its impossible for a cummins to idle at hwy speeds......unless you kick it into neutral.:w2:
You must have 373 gears. I have an auto with 373's and it cruises at 2k at 70 mph.

Yeah I didnt know for sure I'm pretty new to the Cummins thing I just picked mine up a whole 2 months ago but I have noticed the redline is alot lower on them as well so it does make sense that it is normal just seemed a little higher then im used to, thanks though!

Yeah these beasts make a bunch of torque in the lower RPM's. I never really rev mine past 2 grand. Usually thats just accelerating, but I almost always cruise at 1600 to 1800 rpms. Welcome to the Cummins family....:hellox:

BTW, with a few easy basic mods like CAI or BHAF air filter and free-flowing exhaust, can wake it up a bit and also increase your fuel mileage. These trucks are quite fiel efficient to begin with.

Haha nice and thank you. Best part is im a die hard Chevy guy I live by their gas engines but I will not touch their diesel line. I think Cummins is better then a dmax any day. One other thing.... is it normal when you rev it for the rpms to not drop the second you get off the pedal? Usually it gradually comes back down on mine.

Bigg Redd 11-01-2012 11:33 PM

Yep. Mine does the same, as well as my dad's. He also has an 06, but his has a manual 6 speed trans. Its normal bro. Nothing to be concerned about.:c: I too am a die hard chevy fanatic, by the way. V8 gas engines only though:rocking:

Yep your a ok but diesel are low rpm so the redline is closer than it would be on a gasser Welcome to the addiction of the CUMMINS!!!
