New to the 5.9 world. Need advise.

Hey guys

Been out of a diesel for about 3 years now since I had to sell my 6.7 Cummins. Getting sick and tired of the gas jobbie I regrettably bought after I sold it and now need a Cummins again.

Looking at 03-06 manuals with around 150 to 180 mile on the clock. Been doing a lot or research on the web but nothing beats first hand experience.

Anything in particular I should be lookin at on the common rails when I am buying one?

Any +’s or -‘s with 04 vs 04 ½

All the help I can get would be great

Biggest thing for a high miled common rail or any dodge for that matter is how the front end is? Does it drive good or is the front end really loose. If it is loose that can cost some serious money depending on what all needs replaced. Second is how well does it start, idle, and drive. Or if there is any white smoke upon start up or idle. This means the injectors may be bad as well and that is a expensive fix.

if it has over 100,000 look at putting new injectors in the near future, and something ive learned is most modified trucks are beat and drivin poorly, i would try to find a stock truck owned by a man that used it to haul his camper.

Thanks guys. I’ve owned and built my fare share of trucks & jeeps in past and know what to look for as far as bodies, suspension and power train go.

Looking for anything I have to look for in regards to the engine in particular. Tell tale signs that something has been done that should have been or common failures that aren’t so apparent.

I’ve pretty much excepted the fact that I’ll have to redo the injectors at some point, but being a heavy equipment mechanic, injector replacement is not an issue.

Just not familiar with Cummins that’s all.
