What exhaust is best?

OK. I am searching, I am sure this has been asked multiple times.

But, I just want to know what exhaust setup is best for a stock '05 5.9L.

Thank you in advance for any suggestions.

It is for my son's truck. (16 y/o) He wants better sound, but not so loud he will get a ticket. He thinks he wants a stack. I am not too sure about that, myself. But, it is his truck. I just want him to make an informed decision. His tailpipe, after the muffler, fell off and we need to do something. Not bad for 333,6?? miles.

1999stroker 09-07-2012 03:18 PM

any old turbo back depends what size he wants etc. , I have a 3 inch down pipe, to a 4 inch back with a muffler and sounds pretty good. If he doesn't want loud don't do a stack their obnoxious drone in the cab is annoying my. 02

thank you. He does want loud. He just doesn't want the cops harassing him or neighbors complaining. He wants a stack, because he thinks they are cool. But, he also has a topper and doesn't want it filled with soot when he needs to use it.

5" straight piped with 6" tip

Luke

IGOU 09-07-2012 03:59 PM

Sounds good, thanks. I guess, if it's too loud, we can always add a muffler.

Straight piping won't cause any problems? Do these things have an O2 sensor, or anything else that will throw a code? I could crawl under there and look, but right now it is just tooo hot outside. I will look tomorrow.

biged681985 09-07-2012 03:59 PM

Like Luke, 5" with jut a six inch tip. Stacks are loud as hell in the cab. Yes they look good, but I'm not worth it on a daily driver.

H.R.D 09-07-2012 04:30 PM

If he doesn't want it loud then get a muffled system. A 5" straight is going to be loud outside and inside, not near the noise stacks make, but it is still loud. This is just my opinion but straight piped CR's sound like shat!

minncountryboy 09-10-2012 11:28 AM

If you want some tone without being to loud.. I'd look into mprb 4" turbo back with their performance muffler.. I know a lot of guys with it and they love it.. 5 inch turbo back striaght pipe will be to loud, a buddy of mine has it on his 07 5.9 cr and you can hear him coming from like 5 block away

J_rod426 09-11-2012 07:20 PM

IMO 4'' MBRP turbo back, if he wants better sound without being too loud. I had that setup on my truck before I opt'd out for the 5" turbo back. The 5" turbo back is loud, but nothing compared to stacks or a straight pipe. I agree with H.R.D, a straight pipe sounds terrible on CR trucks.

IGOU 09-11-2012 07:32 PM

Thanks, guys. He already wanted a MBRP. They seem to be quite a bit more expensive, though. I was kinda leaning toward a 4" turbo-back diamond eye, with muffler. Luke gave me a good quote on an expandit. But, I don't know anything about them. He said that is what he has on his truck. The factory one lasted this long. I'm sure this will be the only one he needs to ever buy for this truck. I just want to get a good one. But, I don't want to spend $400, either. :argh:

J_rod426 09-11-2012 07:42 PM

I have been on that crossroads man, but you gotta spend some money to get a quality product. The only reason I went for my 5" was, because the dealer in my area quoted me a "buddy price" of $450 out the door for the kit and I could not pass on it. Best of luck to you no matter which one you choose. :c:

Diesel Dawgs Performance 09-11-2012 08:00 PM

I sale more 5" kits than 4" kits 10 times over.

Luke

IGOU 09-11-2012 08:04 PM

Thanks, Luke. I'm gonna make a decision soon, I'm sure.

Bigg Redd 09-11-2012 09:32 PM

4inch turbo back with MBRP muffler. Good sound, but not too loud. :rocking:

tiremann9669 09-11-2012 11:37 PM

I have the 4" Diamond Eye on my 12 valve and I like it. I had it welded rather than using the clamps though. :c:

Bigg Redd 09-12-2012 10:29 AM

IMO any 4 inch will work, but the muffler is the important part. I went with MBRP after having the AFE muffler that came with my AFE Exhaust Kit. I Didnt much care for the sound of the AFE Muffler. I had been to a truck show, about a year ago, and saw a highly lifted 07 Dodge cummins 4x4 dually driving in. It sounded pretty darned good. I got with the owner and he said he had an MBRP Muffler. I went with that and love it. Relatively mellow for the most part, but put it to the floor and you'll definately hear it. you may be able to find sound clips of different mufflers, on line, if that helps.:c:

IGOU 09-12-2012 10:36 AM

Thank you. That is helpful. :tu:

Maybe we can mix it up a little, huh? Maybe I can get a quote on an aluminized kit, w/out a muffler and add the MBRP. I'll look into that. :humm:

Or, maybe just get the diamond eye and if we don't like the sound add the MBRP later. I already am probably gonna have to add the tip later. They seem to cost about the same as the kits!

H.R.D 09-12-2012 11:31 AM

Look on eBay for tips they have a large selection with decent prices. Also you maybe able to find a promotion that includes a tip when you buy a kit.

tiremann9669 09-12-2012 11:39 AM

My 4" Diamond eye came with the 5" tip of my choice. :c:

Diesel Dawgs Performance 09-12-2012 11:40 AM

We have plenty of exhaust tips to choose from for 4" or 5" systems.

Luke

IGOU 09-12-2012 12:38 PM

Thanks, guys.

It Worked for me! (See my Signature). Plus, I recently found a new stainless 5" tail pipe section on Ebay for $60 bucks shipped. I switched out the 4" tail pipe section for the 5" + new tip and welded it on, and it looks pretty cool. Looks like a 5" exhaust from the rear. No one's the wiser. I Dont know the brand of the tail pipe section but its mandrel bent and a quality piece. I couldnt beat the price. I dont remember the name of the muffler shop that listed it, but it came from Pittsburg Pennsylania. Definately a good score!:jump:

Bigg Redd 09-18-2012 06:11 PM

IGOU, Ya get an exhaust system yet? :pca1:

IGOU 09-18-2012 06:53 PM

Yes, sir. 4" MBRP aluminized. Thanks for all your help.

Bigg Redd 09-19-2012 12:09 PM

Right on. Good choice! THese systems are pretty easy to install. You can do the entire project, removing old & installing new, in about 2 hrs............ give or take a minute or so. You wont be sorry. Enjoy! :c:

IGOU 09-19-2012 12:59 PM

I ordered it for my son's truck. He may have it on before I get home. I don't know when that will be. So, he's not likely to wait. I know he'll be pretty excited. He wanted the MBPRP after extensive 'research' on YouTube. He and his friends drove me nuts listening to all the different exhausts, LOL.

Since the factory lasted so long, I'm hoping the aluminized lasts longer than it's two year warranty. I couldn't spend twice as much on the stainless when the truck has almost 134,000 miles on it!

Anyway, thanks to everyone for all the help.:c:

Bigg Redd 09-19-2012 03:43 PM

Im glad we were able to help. Thats what I admire about this forum. Members are always willing to chime in and help. Good folks IMO. My AFE is aluminized as well (except for the 5" stainless tail pipe section and MBRP muffler) and its been on my truck since 2007. It still looks great and no issues. Cheers to you my friend. :c:

f4ujmb 09-21-2012 08:53 PM

Does any one know if these turbo back systems come with the hangers welded on
thanks

Bigg Redd 09-22-2012 04:55 PM

My AFE did! No sure if all do tho.

Guess I should proofread before I post.

Well, my son started tearing his old exhaust off, the day the new one arrived. But, he had some problems. Haha... He said all the clamps came off, easily. The factory downpipe came out of the turbo, easily. But, the pipes would not separate. So, he could not get the old exhaust out. My wife made him go inside after dark. Then, he had to go get a grinder to cut the pipe, so he could get it out.

Poor fellar. His truck was not drivable for a couple days until he could get back to it. I haven't talked to him, today. But, I'm sure he got it done today. That is, if he didn't go to the state cheerleading finals with his mom and sister.

Bigg Redd 09-23-2012 04:34 PM

Thats kind of the luck of the draw when it comes to taking out the original exhaust system. Sometimes theyre easy and other times theyre a PITA, bloody knuckles and all.
But, its worth it for sure. "Bombing" your truck is always fun and the learning experience is a bonus. Hope he doesnt get frustrated. Its all good!:tu:

IGOU 09-23-2012 06:46 PM

I think he did get frustrated the first evening, when he started on it. I kinda think it's funny, though. He wants to be an engineer. I have hated engineers ever since I first started working on my own vehicles. I tell every engineer I meet that I hate engineers. LOL. So, I like that he can feel my pain.

He talked my wife into buying him a grinder. I said, he should have gotten a sawzall. We were talking about it, and I told him to go buy a cordless sawzall. My wife said, NO! You are not gonna buy a cordless one! Haha. I have been trying to get one for years. I thought maybe her baby could pull it off. But, I guess I went about it wrong.

Poor fellar. I have most of my tools with me at work. I am not home much.

Bigg Redd 09-25-2012 07:35 PM

Well OK. I can see where the frustration comes in. It always helps to have the right tools for the job. He will certainly be all-smiles when the project is complete. Been there-done that! Improvise, adapt, and overcome, it will get done. :choochoo:

IGOU 09-25-2012 07:59 PM

Improvise, adapt, and overcome. Those words ring a bell. You a leatherneck?

Bigg Redd 09-25-2012 09:52 PM

Nah, retired POPO with alot of time on my hands.

IGOU 09-25-2012 10:02 PM

Well... That's like a secondary motto of the Marine Corps. I've heard it a time or two. Haha.

Bigg Redd 09-25-2012 10:09 PM

I hear ya! Its my mindset when working on various projects. Otherwise, I wouldnt give a sh*t. :c:

jemery20 09-26-2012 01:56 AM

i have a MBRP 5" turbo back with a muffler and its not loud in the cab

retread225j 09-30-2012 04:53 PM

if down pipe and piping in front of muffler are all good. just delete cat go with something like the mbrp quiet tone muffler and add tail pipe. no drone in cab quiet when cruising and will talk to ya when on it. plus cheaper than buying whole system.:tu: i'm running this on my 06

Red Cummins 10-01-2012 03:14 PM

I have a 4" MBRP. It was on the truck when I got it. Love the sound for the most part but it could be quieter in the cab. Of course I only want to hear it when the windows are rolled down.:w2:
