Newb with rear axle leak
Hey guys, I'm new here and new to the "Cummins" world. I've got a 2003 3500 4x4 SRW and I have gear oil coming out the end of my passenger side rear axle. Is this a very hard job? Anything I should be aware of before tearing this thing apart? Any insight is greatly appreciated.

Does this have a heavy duty style rear end? I'd hope so, If so, you take the 8 or so bolts out of the cap that is at the end of you axle and start removing the bearings and such, then replace that seal that is where your axel slides through.

Cool, that definitely sounds like something I can handle. Thanks.

You have to remove the hub and the seal is in the back side of the hub. The Robenator is correct, I just wanted to say that the seal is in the hub not the axle tube. :tu:

Depends if its the hub seal or the gasket between the hub and axleshaft...the way he describes it, it sounds like the axleshaft is leaking, not the wheel/hub seal. |
Well I actually got pretty deep into it last night and it is actually the hub seal that has been leaking and it looks like the bearings are shot. :td: It looked like real fine steel wool was inbedded in the bearings so it looks like that are getting replaced this evening.
