shifting question...

hello new to the forum and new to diesel ownership. I have 80xxx on my 01 single cab, and on a good day if you punch it at 60 it will downshift to 4rth, but somedays it will not do this and it takes a solid 5 secs or so, any ideas for this fix?

besides holding second gear a little longer than it should that is the only complaints I have of the truck

try adjusting the tv cable

Sounds dumb but check your tranny fluid level while your trucks running and hot...
Also your local auto shop should have some magic goop to throw in there to help out the trans... When I had autos I put lucas stop slip in and it fixed all my problems... lol

Just a thought and my 2 cents.. I have never bought a cummins with an auto...

i realized what i was getting into with reliabilty issues but honestly the truck drives great and its not that big of a issue with me, the truck just gets me back and forth to work, and was purchased to tow a boat basically. transmission fluid was just topped off and full, i will try some lucas soon and see what that does to it. also the cable was adjusted before i bought the truck because it was having trouble between 45-50 deciding what gear to be in.. that was fixed but maybe not correctly?

well the tv/kick down cable tells the transmission to down shift when the pedel is nailed, if its not correctly adjusted it will not work right, and i believe it controls up shifting which could also be the reason why it holds 2nd for a long time.

yea when I get a free day im gunna have a guy look at it get a second opinion.. is the technical term called tv cable? I thought they were calling it something diff last time...

dieseldude848 06-20-2012 10:11 PM

tv cable is short for throttle valve cable. it tells the transmission when to shift, when to down shift, and when to delay the 3rd to 4th o/d shift depending on throttle position if im not mistaken.

I have an 02 qclb with 86k on it and it takes it an extra sec to shift second or third sometimes, I was wondering if a shift kit would fix this? or would it be the tv cable adjustment also?
