Do I Have a Blown Turbo?

i start my truck and it sounds fine but has a tint of white smoke coming out at first, when i rev my engine even just a little i hear a deep winding down sound around my turbo. i had the check engine light come on fora min then go away then on again fora few min then off. what is going on? :argh:

You have a fuel pressure guage?

Is this a stock truck?

Have you scanned for codes?

Bigg Redd 05-07-2012 11:36 PM

Scan it for sure. This will take most of the guess work out of it. Also check your turbo and see if there is too much play on the impeller wheel....possible crapped out bearing comes to mind. :humm: Hope it aint serious!

Dr. Evil 05-07-2012 11:38 PM

yes, inspect the impeller....

Young bucK 05-08-2012 12:58 AM

is there suposed to be any play in it at all? there is a little but nothing insane i remember wigling it around, i haven't gotten it scanned for codes yet im in afghanistan right now i come home in about 20 days

A little play is normal, and is needed for thermal expansion.

Bigg Redd 05-08-2012 02:08 PM

As long as the play isnt sloppy. Scanning is a good place to start. BTW, Thank you for your service to our country. I wish you a safe return. :usa:

Young bucK 05-08-2012 10:31 PM

okay i will start there, it just sucks that its 80$ to do the scan its stupid.. and no problem i love to serve :bat:

Dr. Evil 05-08-2012 11:11 PM

For eighty bucks you can buy a decent scanner

Young bucK 05-09-2012 01:50 AM

they sell those?

RAW 05-09-2012 06:38 AM

You can buy a code reader for $10. Plugs in, shows the code(s), and then you look them up. The more you spend, the more it will tell you about the code.

Young bucK 05-10-2012 08:28 AM

oh sweet yeah ill look at one right now! haha thanks!

Dr. Evil 05-10-2012 12:42 PM

Get one that will erase codes...just a reader is no good....

Young bucK 05-12-2012 04:06 AM

where do i get one of those??

Dr. Evil 05-12-2012 04:33 PM

all over the place - parts stores etc. Expect to pay $100 for a decent one. Even Amazon.com or ebay.

You are looking for an OBDII code scanner

If you have a 24V you need one of these along with a fuel pressure guage as a minimum.

ducktape 05-12-2012 06:27 PM

i bought mine for $150 code reader and freeze data well worth it :) flashing check engine is very bad and can cause serious damage. look for damage and oil in the turbo and around it.
