Need help please! Tranny wont shift

I have a 01 cummins auto and it won't shift into overdrive. And its taking off in 3rd gear. I was driving it today and it was fine. Went to drive it couple hours later and I noticed I had to give it a lot of throttle to take off and then it wouldn't shift into OD. Needs some help please. Could it be a fuse or voltage problem? :argh:

I think your trannys shot...or it could be a solenoid in your valve body..when is the last u changed the fluid?

The tranny was rebuilt about 30k ago. Today i got in and drove it and it was perfectly fine.. think it might be the silenoid

I doubt the tranny is shot. Its probably taking off in 2nd gear....thats limp mode. Something went wrong to where the computer is trying to protect the truck. You need to get it to a shop and have them check it out. I'm guessing the check engine light is on....any other lights on in the dash???

The only light on is the abs and that's been on for awhile. But every morning when the truck is cold it drives perfect. Goes through all gears and overdrive, but once it warms up it gets stuck in gear again? Have any ideas now???

Could be a few different things if it only happens once it warms up. It could be low fluid, a solenoid thats going bad (the heated fluid could be causing to much resistance), pump is getting to much play.....makes it hard. Might see if you can get someone to pull the codes out of the computer and see if it stored anything. It can store codes and not turn the CEL on. Was the pump replaced when the tranny was overhauled???

I took it to a tranny shop he said the silenoids were bad so he replaced them but I still have the same problem. He took the valve body all apart n nothin was wrong with it besides the silenoid. I dnt get it at all...

Hey man, my transmission guy told me a few problems with these things. Make sure the springs where the cable runs from trans to throttle linkage are on. There is one on each end. He told me it will do exactly what your describing.

BigBoyToys 05-06-2012 12:16 PM

Yeah I found the problem. The idiot I bought the truck from had a torque converter lock up switch wired into the computer and had a ground going to a wire on the computer so it was back feeding thru the computer, I cut the wires n boom problem fixed. Some ppl are idiots I tell yeah. Thanks everyone for your help!!!
