Common brakes and power steering goes out!!!!
How's it going guys!
Driving down the street today and brakes along with power steering went out!!! 1999 cummins 5spd Then coasted into the curb :( I looked under the truck and there was powersteering leaking like crazy Till completely went out My question is what is it and hard fix???? ( steering box, vacuum pump ? ) I understand this is a common thread but nobodys actually leak Help please!!!! 408-417-5766 if possible daily driver need asap Or post thanks!!!!!! ---AutoMerged DoublePost--- I can get a pic first thing in morning |
A pic would definitely be helpful.
|
you coulda just blown a line for your hydro boost? pumps still pumpin but it aint going where its suppost to, then you run out of fluid and loose your power steering. thats where i would start.
|
I'm getting pic right now and it leaks like crazy so has to be this part
|
Mine did that last year, and it was the line to the hydroboost too.

heres the picture it leaks 1005 all powersteering fluid from here and started to leak a bit an hr before they both went out completely
the power steering and brakes what is this part? where do i find it? how much and can out together myself ect |
sorry about late picture couldnt upload
BUMP |
I couldn't tell much from the pic. Is it coming from above the pitman arm? With out seeing it in person, the pic would make it look like it is coming from the seal around the output shaft from the steering gearbox. Is the top of the gear box wet from PS fluid? If so it could possibly be a hose.
---AutoMerged DoublePost--- All the parts can be gotten at just about any parts store to answer you last questions. Depending on you wrenching skills and selection of tools available it can be done at home. might take some longer than others. |
Yes the steering box I believe its called
The pitman arm is connected to it and that little seal is leaking excatly what you said all fluids coming from the bottom right where it connects to the arm! Can I just take pitmam arm off then get that seal off and replace with new part and it will stop Leaking then fill with fluid and good to go????? |
got to admit, I've never had to replace a leaking output shaft seal on a steering box. I'm not sure exactly what type of seal is in there. Some reason it comes to mind it is an internal seal. My opinion would to take that to a shop.
|
Shops equal money I dont have and just trying to find someone who has had same part leak
Thanks for info boss! Anyone?? |
hydro pump, mine did it two months ago. annoying as hell drove like that for two months with a bum shoulder.
|
But it worked 100% percent then 30 min later I have no brakes or power sterring
And its leaking all out off steering box |
I've seen just the seals for sale, but not sure of how tough of a job it is, since I've never done it.
|
mine leaked out of the power steering pump but upon replacement of the hydro pump everything returned to normal.

You need a puller for the pitnam arm,I've changed 2 of these on older gassers I owned in the past. Is the pitnam shaft tight in the housing? If it has the side to side play these boxes are noted for,or the exsessive worm gear sector gear play you should change the stearing box,but if those issues are't there, I used a small drill to CAREFULLY!!! drill 3 holes in the seal in a triangle pattern then CAREFULLY!!! put in sheetmetal screws & pulled the seal out,Donn't go to deep drilling or with the screws, the bearing/bushing is there.I think I had aluminum pipe I used to drive the new seal in.

Ive replaced the steering box on a 97 2500 5.9. it wouldve been easier but i had a snowplow bracket in the way and hindered my ability to get around to the bolts. but it is a easy job just make sure you dont strip any rusty bolts and you should be fine. :c:
---AutoMerged DoublePost--- And one more thing. Ive taken apart the gear and i could not put it back together! :nope: The auto stores around me said it would be better just to buy a new one and you get a core charge with it. That was the easiest option. |
