98 24valve Dodge No Start.

im posting for a buddy of mine. he has a 1998 2500 24 valve. no mods except exhaust. he was leaving work to go get lunch one day it started fine started to go up a hill and it started sputtering and blowing white smoke., then, it shut off and wouldnt refire. so he pops the hood and notices smoke. here the LP is smoking and hot. so he replaces the LP and primes it and it fires, put 2 new batts in and drives it for 2hrs and shuts it off at a buddys house. goes out 45 min later and truck wont start. just cranks. then they crack Inj. lines and cranks more and more then fuel starts coming out of em, so he tightens em, and the truck starts and runs like a high performance truck(but its stock). but if u shut it off and immediately try to start again it wont start just crank. i hooked my scanner up tonight and no codes just, transfer pump circuit out of range. i was wondering what u guys think. i think he fried IP becuase he has no gauges and pulls a race car alllllll summer and who knows how long with no fuel pressure. but i never heard of one actually firing again. let me know were goona try and get truck fired again and bring it over to our shop so we can work on it on sunday.

thanks in advance
Cody

I say 90% chance its the VP-44 and probably the LP too. He probably could have saved a thousand bucks or more with a FP guage.

well since he replaced the LP it must be IP, thats the only thing could be right?

They will usually throw a code but not always.

Does he have fuel at the test port on the VP-44?

Hard starts when warm and lots of white smoke are known to be classic signs of IP failure.

the truck wont start at anytime no matter how cold or warm. also it only blew white smoke the first time the truck shut off. u think that the relief valve in IP on the return side is weak? i was gonna pull that lil valve and blow air through it to see if it blows through easy or takes some pressure to blow through it. he also changed filter with the pump(warranty purpose).

On the part with codes. one guy up the street has an 01 SO 5spd. drag comp 80hp injectors. he could put it in fifth at 35mph and floor it and it wouldnt go any faster. I put a new IP on it (an II HRVP44) now he does the same thing and he breaks the tires loose and black smoke out the wazoo. but when his truck had no power it threw no codes.

thanks

Update?

Cumminsdieselboy 02-22-2008 06:28 PM

well.....

my dad went over and tried to start it while i was at work. the had my dads truck hooked up to it battery to battery. no fuel at all from any injection line. never got it fired. now the guy has to get the truck over to me and get enough money for the pump. so that would be a fair diagnosis?

thanks for the ideas.

Whats the Status here?

Cumminsdieselboy 03-08-2008 06:27 PM

we diagnosed it down to an injection pump and the guy gotta get the money to get a new one. thanks to all that helped.

Make sure he puts a fuel pressure guage on this thing. That is the most important mod you can make on one a these VP44 trucks. Number 1 on the list. If he had that $50 guage he may very well have saved a $1000 plus for the pump. And it has to be mounted where he can see it at all times.
