Is it a Cam Shaft Sensor problem??
Well I have an issue with my pick up it stumbles hard at idle when it is cold outside and the grid is cycling. This started earlier this fall. Fuel pressure is good the entire time no codes are showing up at all. It will stumble hard then go right back to normal idle, however if you start driving it will not do it again. I have been doing some research and I believe it is the CSS, however I want some other opinions on the situation.
I have included a video of what it does. Truck was just previously started before I started filming. |
Cam sensor isn't known to fail without a code. Definatly a pretty big hiccup. You using a good scanner or just key trick?
Actually they are know to quit working intermittently with out a code. I am just doing the key trick.
No kidding, first time I've heard that. One thing I can say for sure is that things a mofo to get at... I was told to do mine while I had VP off and I failed. I did do my crank sensor and have heard those 2 have similar symptoms?
Mine went out without any codes. It was really hard to start and would intermittently die. And yeah, it was a hard one to get to. Lucky for me I have little girl hands :tu:
But the sensor is only like $40. It's definitely worth a try. |

Well I changed it out today. Let me tell you what that is a real chore with these big ole paws I call hands. Geeze it is in a horrible location! Good thing I had an extra set of hands. I will report back if this cured the ole girl.
24 v does have a crank position sensor, behind the starter.
Well didn't know that Dan, good to know.
So far so good the ole girl didn't stumble this morning. I think I got it figured out.:tu: |

Mine throws the cam sensor code like every 3 weeks and its new from Cummins parts counter bet I got a bad one
Very possible my friend.
i think my truck has this same problem idles from 800rpm to 870rpm sounds like grid heater keeps kickin in what do you think H.R.D. plus i cant look at your video says its private
Mine would drop in rpm very fast and then right back to normal idle. The video is a youtube video so it should work for you, but if not I have no idea why not.
To me yours sounds like the grids are kicking it, which it should if the temp is low enough. Does it do it all the time when idling or just after start up? |
You may have a setting in YouTube that doesn't allow "non-friends" or some thing like that to view the video. I couldn't view it, tried logging in as well, no change.

yeah mine will drop and pick right back up and sometimes it will go higher then back down. i have noticed it doing this pretty much all the time
It could be a CSS, have you checked for codes? It is a fairly inexpensive part so you may want to try it.
Check for codes. Mine would stumble driving down the road then pick right back up. It was the crank sensor. Crank sensor is behind the starter. Pretty easy to change. Cam sensor is behind hte VP and a pain in the as* to change. Dont ask me how i know haha
Okay I think I got it set to public. See if the video works for you cats now.
That video is helpful cause that isn't what my truck does I would say that my rpms are just fluttering not all the time just sometimes
My programmer said my crank sensor is out, is on the front of engine on drivers side on a 05 cummins?

Just thought I'd update this old thread for future readers. I have 2011 ram and it had similar problems as what was asked. It would stumble or surge in the morning at 70 degrees like the heater grid was on. And then again between 1500 and 2000 rpms not codes and everything I can monitor through my cts2 seemed fine I have full delete or dpf and egr with 5 postion switch with efi. It was the cam sensor as well and I cant say for all 6.7 but i know 2010 up does have a crank sensor and it on the bottom front of the motor with a tone ring behind the balancer and it is the same part as the cam sensor. And one last thing if you do the cam sensor take tire and inner fender off and place a jack stand behind the radius arm and drop the hub to the ground makes it alot easy. Good luck to future readers with this problem.
