Grid heater issue?

Lately ive noticed my truck having problems starting, on hot days itll have no pro lem, and when its cold enough for wait to start light stay on for a few seconds it has no problem, but on the days in between hot and cold it doesnt wanna start, ill turn the key half way, wait to start light will go out, and i have to sit there and crank it for like 10 seconds to get it to fire then i get a big cloud of white smoke so i know getting fuel is not the issue, do you all think its the grid heater?

Well you have a pusher pump so 15psi at the VP inlet doesn't mean much, next time you try to start it and think it might have a hard time, crack an injector line and see if any fuel comes out. Most of the posts I've seen on this type of issue means bad VP, mechanical failure due to cracked diaphram.

Re: Grid heater issue?

I was told at the diewel shop to leave the psi where its at, and the the truck has plenty of fuel it puts out a big white puff once it starts, and it only does it when its in warm temps. Hot and cold cold weather it starts just fine

Edit, and it does it all the time when its warm out not just once in a while

A big black puff on startup sounds right... white is not good, did anybody crack an injector line? You can be seeing 15psi and not getting it thru the injection pump because of a damaged rotor or diaphram. Do some searching. These trucks shouldn't be hard starting, ever. ESPECIALLY hard warm/hot starts, signature symptom of damaged vp44

Re: Grid heater issue?

I did have a code once it was pump timing calibration, but im sure it was from my smarty, the truck isnt always hard to start just after it sits for a few hours, but if i run it for a bit and turn it off and it starts up just fine

Re: Grid heater issue?

Think i just found the issue i scanned it for codes and im getting a p0382 intake air heater relay and a p0236 map sensor too high too long, im gueseing the relay is whats causing it

Case closed... glad to hear it's nothing serious :rocking:

Yep, if the wiring and relays are ok then the only thing left is the heater. Mine had one coil go bad, and it was smoking bad white when cold. New used heater off an 06 solved the issue.
