Here's what the truck is doing....when i turn the key to start the truck the starter turns but really slow.....almost wont start the truck!!!! so this is what i did....I took the truck down to the local Advanced Auto Parts and had them run a check on my charging system...and these were the results BATTERY TEST (drivers side)<<<didn't do passenger side..guy said this one will do Voltage : 12.96 Rated CCA : 710 Measured : 1197 Temperature :115 on the receipt it says NORMAL ----Battery meets or exceeds required standards---- Then it checked the Charging system and this is what it said No load : 13.83v----9.9amp Loaded : 13.80----3.2amp<<<<Had me turn everything on in the truck while it was running And then finally a starter test and this is what it said Voltage : 10.30v Amps : 379.8amp Time : 1.17sec.<<<<don't sound like very long but its way longer then normal!! Drain Test : 0.52a Normal Now i know what some of this means but it still don't tell me why my truck doesn't want to start.....i didn't think it was going to start this morning to drive home....i need to get this problem solved so i don't get stranded....i don't have that much money laying around so i cant just go buy 2 batteries , alternator and a starter and see if that fixes my problem....its going to be a one or the other deal....or i'm going to be driving my offroad buggy to work!!! What could be the problem????? any and all help would be greatly appreciated!!!! :c: ---AutoMerged DoublePost--- Well guys after checking everything out it seems i missed one small detail.....sure i knew it had a very small amount of corsion on the battery cables but what i didnt notice was.....that both negative terminals are broken....see picture below....the battery on the drivers side is tight as can be but the battery on the passanger side negative terminal was loose.... would this cause the truck to start like it is trying to start with a dead or dieing battery? ? ? let me know what you thing please ! ! ! Check both batteries. More than likely you have a dead cell in the other one.

---AutoMerged DoublePost--- ok guys another up date on my starting issue.......this is what i did today cleaned and or replaced battery cable terminals....only 2 needed replaced the other 2 looked really good after i cleaned them....also cleaned the posts on both batterys....put it all back together and.................still the same...very slow turning over but insted of picking up the pase and starting.... it got slower untill it stopped all together!!!!! SO now im thinking .....must be one of the batterys are bad or like said above a bad cell.....ok so i take the batteries out and take them to advanced auto parts for them to check them out.....the following is what the recipt says DRIVERS SIDE BATTERY : voltage : 12.76v rated : 710cca measured : 735cca temperature : 93*f GOOD BATTERY PASSANGER SIDE BATTERY : voltage : 12.73v Rated : 710cca measured : 874cca Temperature : 93*f GOOD BATTERY so i need more ideas as to what is wrong with my starting issue.....i guess the next thing i can do is to take the starter off and go have it tested...but if yall got anymore ideas im all ears!!!! |
come on guys....anything else it could be? ? ?

You don't have to replace the starter.....just the contacts in the starter. Usually just the one from the positive side of the battery. Did mine with out taking the starter out.STARTER SOLENOID REBUILD KIT ('89-'06)-Dodge Cummins Diesel Truck Accessories – Geno’s Garage

ok so i get under the truck to take the starter out ran in to a couple problems
1.How do you unhook the positive wire from the starter??? it has a cover on it that WILL not come off....i guess it would come off if i broke it but i dont really want to do that 2.what size bots hold the starter on? i tried several different wrenches but none of them fit....and they look like some kind of star head ...which i have no tools that fit them!!! 3.How many bolts does the starter have holding it on?? im pretty sure there is one on the top of the starter but i cant seem to find it and there looks like there are 2 (star heads) holding it on in the bottom of the starter any help would be great!!!!! |
Should be 3 bolts. Either 10 mm wrench or I think 10-12 hex wrench. Shouldn't be torx. Either way there is not alot of room to work. I took mine out with just an open end wrench from below. For the style with hex I hear its easier to get the top bolt up top and the two bottoms from below. The rubber cap or plastic just pop off with a screw driver. Once you have it out the solenoid cover comes off and you should be able to tell easy if the contacts are bad. The positive will most likely be thin or hardly there. Just remove the plunger and use a wrench to remove the nuts on the studs, slide the contacts out And drop new parts in. You wont be able to get parts at your local auto parts store so go onto google and type in dodge cummins starter contacts and you should find the rebuild kit. Or genos garage. The install is exactly reverse of removal and break down. Doing contacts and the plunger will be alot cheaper than a whole starter obviously, I picked up contacts for 30 shipped to my door in 2 days. Compared to a 200 dollar starter at cheapest it's a great deal. You don't have to be mechanically inclined to do it either. Super easy and super cheap.:tu:

3 bolts, 10mm 12 point. Not terrible to get to.

thanks for the tips guys...i got the starter pulled out today but wasnt able to get it tested (got called in to work) im going to get it bench tested tomorrow on my way home from taking the boy to school...if it all tests out bad then im going to order that starter rebuild kit from genos......its the next cheapest step!!!
so now comes a more hypethical question...if every thing checks out ok (good) with the starter on the bench what should my next step be? ? ? what should i be looking for? ? ? thanks a ton guys!!! ---AutoMerged DoublePost--- just went and had the starter bench tested at Advanced Auto Parts and it tripped the breaker in the store ....i mean the WHOLE store blacked out....the guy said i think your starter is bad...and i said i think your circuit breaker is bad ! ! ! ! after he got the power turned back on he tested the starter again and it didn't move, click or anything...he taped it with a hammer a couple times and still nothing....i know its bad news when you have to go buy a part but believe it or not i'm actually relived that its JUST the starter I want to thank you all for all the help guys !!!! |
