Cruise Control Issues

Gentlemen,

Here's the deal... I am experiencing problems with my cruise control;

Surging
Not Holding Speed
Random Acceleration
Continuous Acceleration

These problems began at the end of last summer, when the weather here in Texas was near to and over 100 degrees, then went away as the weather cooled, and have now returned as the temps are once again nearing 100 degrees.

I have searched my 2001 Dodge Factory Service Manuals in hopes of finding a solution but to no avail. I have read previous posts that relate to vacuum line damage. The service manuals state that the cruise control on the 2001 Dodge Cummins are totally electronic without vacuum lines and canisters and that they are controlled via the ECM.

So, what are my options??? Do I need to spring for a new ECM, at about $800 - $1000, or are the manuals in error and will there be vacuum lines that actuate the cruise control???

Lastly, if the problem is truly in the ECM then, does anyone know of an aftermarket electronic cruise control kit that could be implemented and used in place of the factory unit. I was thinking in terms of wiring an aftermarket unit into the factory controls that are on my steering wheel.

I look forward to your thoughts and opinions.

try taking the adrenalin off and seeing if that fixes it. i had that problem when i tried the adr a couple years ago when it first came out, took it off, problem went away

Seems that if you use a fuel/timing box (Edge,Quad,Smarty,Etc..) that the Cruise Control is very touchy on these trucks.

I can appreciate your thoughts regarding the Quadzilla affecting the cruise control however, the problems that I am experiencing began last summer 2010 well before I installed the Quadzilla. At that time I did not have any type of computer performance enhancement device attached at all. I installed the Quadzilla in January 2011.

My 99 5.9 ram will be running fine with the cruise on and then out of now where will go to wide open throttle and keep going until you hit the brakes or turn off the cruise.

my buddies old first gen would floor it when he set the cruise, set at 65 and ran a record of 102mph for him before he shut it down.

mine when i set it it'll go like 3/4 throttle to full and keep runnin hard till i back it down.

the trick i figured out for mine was when i go to hit set i hold the coast button for a second or few and then if i need to go up use the accel button, normally doing that i can get it to sit right at the speed i want though. i rarely use my cruise though.

Did you ever get this fixed? I have checked several 2001 trucks and they were not all electronic as described in the Dodge service manual. It is only supposed to be all electronic if the truck is equipped with a manual trans. I have found 4 trucks locally with factory cruise and manual transmission. Every one had a vacuum cruise servo. I have yet to see one that operates with out it. I know there are several people on here that state there truck has no servo but it is not a hard and fast rule. Look under your battery on the drivers side. I the servo is there start checking for vac leaks. It is verey common as battery acid likes to run down under the battery.

When I bought my '01, it was a fleet truck and had no options, ie no cruise.
All I had to do to it to get cruise, was get a steering column from a junk yard that had the cruise buttons and clock spring. The cruise goes straight from the pcm and the vp44. I would say that your issues are probably in the vp44, especially due to the heat, seeing how the vp44 are notoriously plagued with heat issues... If you had an auto, then you could link the problem to a vacuum line or vacuum servo.
