2001 cummins oil leak?!?!

2001 24v cummins
my entire under carriage was coated in oil so i cleaned it all off to find out where the oil is coming from and i think i narrowed it down to the front left (drivers) side of the block right behind a pulley....any help?

TugBoat 04-23-2011 03:41 AM

Not coming out of blow by tube?

Redneckcummins 04-23-2011 07:30 PM

no it looks to be coming out the bottom of the crankcase

Laster 04-23-2011 08:54 PM

Do you still have the factory bottle for crank case attached? It can cause oil to get everywhere once it reaches the fan. Just a thought.

TugBoat 04-23-2011 09:53 PM

Ck the front cover and pan bolts? Maybe behind the vac or vp ?

Very popular for the gasket between the Vac pump and timing cover to leak. Mine did, and it looked like a front crank seal leak by the way the fan was throwing it around. I ended up pulling my fan off and running the engine to pinpoint the leak.

Redneckcummins 04-28-2011 07:28 AM

at first it was leaking on the drivers side now the drips are all on the passenger side?!:argh:

cam899 04-29-2011 01:39 PM

its most likely to be the vac pump thats where mine was 250 dollar fix havent seen a drop since

RAW 04-29-2011 02:31 PM

$250??? Get a shop to do it I assume?

Redneckcummins 05-05-2011 07:20 PM

so i think i found the leak after $35 and 3 hours at the car wash......a loose bolt:scare2::argh:

Mine leaks at the oring between powersteering pump and vacum pump

Mine leaks at the oring between powersteering pump and vacum pump
It's probably the shaft seal between the two. I resealed mine a few months ago.

smokybob 11-05-2012 03:33 PM

@redneckcummins. Did you ever confirm the problem was the loose bolt? I recently bought an 01 cummins and have what seems like the same leak. Replaced the front main seal a few weeks ago, but still seam to get some mystery leaks. With all the cached on oil and coats of engine degreaser I have not been able to pinpoint it

RA, you steered me in the direction of some great anzo lights, any advice on where to get the parts to try and solve this leak?

Devon527 11-08-2012 08:44 PM

I'm in the same boat, thought mine was the breather but it's farther back on the drivers side. I heard you can't just buy the one seal you need to fix it?

crazycooter 11-11-2012 12:03 PM

mine too

Mine was leaking there too, and it isn't as simple as an o-ring... the seal (28mm x38mm x 7mm) cost me about $40, and a couple of hours to fix. I pulled the pumps off and split them apart, split the vacuum pump, and then you you have carefully press out the seal housing from the inside of the vac pump body. now change your seal and be very careful about putting the seal housing back in, I chose the freezer method, ie stuck the seal housing in the freezer for 30-40 minutes, and let the pump body sit somewhere warm, and they went right together with just a little bit of encouragement. A bit of grease to hold the orange o-ring into the vac pump body, and put it back together. Then I was reaaly careful mating the ps pump back up to it before I put the assembly back in.

When I firsr got my truck, I drove it 5 hours home get it home and it starts leaking. It too was an oil leak on the drivers side of the block. I did some research, was told the seal between the PS and vac pump. Mine turned out to be the lifter cover gasket bad. It had a crack in it and would leak the oil. Gasket was cheap but did take a few hours to get it replaced. had to remove just about everything on that side to get to it.

I had all and all about 4 hours into it. I did some research on youtube, watched a couple videos then had to go from there.

I bought the parts from Dodge. Despite is sucks paying Stealership price, you get everything you need. Here is a how to on resealing the vacuum pump to power steering pump connection:
