99 dodge overdrive problems

hey guys, just picked up a 99 24v dodge. tranny seems good through all the gears, but will not go into 4th gear overdrive. what could it be? i was told that theres a solenoid on the out side of the trans behind a snap ring, and the o/d off button on the shifter knob could be gone? let me know.. thanks.

there is no shift solenoid outside the case they are all on the valve body. sounds like the solenoid is bad. will it lock in 3rd gear when you turn od off. and does it shift to 4th and not lock up.

yeah trans medic told me that the solenoid was behind a snap ring. goes to show you how much they kno. and the last owner installed a tc lock up switch, an it will lock up in 3rd but it just wont even shift to 4th. i scanned it for codes and nothing came up.

Overdrive is the first to go, when my truck lost overdrive it was burned up, good way to tell is use a scan tool to force it into overdrive if it don't go you overdrive is probally toast

ive never seen one throw a trans code not the 99 anyways. i dont if they even register codes if it does the pcm picks them up and a regular scanner wont read the pcm. it sounds like the lock up solenoid is bad to me it controls 4th gear too. will it lock by its self without the switch making it. if it wont without the switch telling it to its most definitly the lock up bad. but ya the 99 has a lock up solenoid located on the front of the valve body and a pressure sensor and pressure regulator on the driver side rear of the valve body. all of them can be removed just by dropping the pan. you might check the sensors as well or even replace them with the upgraded ones from sun coast, they make a difference in the performance of the tranny.
