Turns Over But No Start
I have a 99 cummins, once a week or soo I will get in it and try to start it and all it will do is turn over. I have been leaving the key on till the block heater shuts down and hit it with starting fluid and it will start and run fine. I know the block heater is good, i have took it off and watched it. Also if you let the truck sit and idle it will run fine for 5 min or so then it will miss and check engine light comes on. but before I can get code reader on it the light goes out. Any help or oppinions would be nice. thanks

i would still check for codes, could still be there just not kicking on the cel. then go from there sounds like a fuel problem to me for some reason but there is too much that could be the cause to just stab a guess into the dark
My truck is doin the exact same thing. My check engine light came on once for about 15 seconds and went away and it still wont start. Iv been told there could be water in the diesel but i dont know how check for it. Thats what i think is wrong with mine anyways.

you could try to drain the watter out of the water seperator, its in the fuel filter housing, there is a lever on there push it and drain the water out
Is that the one that has the drain hose. If so then iv already drained it
Twice, with the lift pump on. |
please dont use starting fluid! you will be doing head gasket next. How cold is it there? take off your filter housing and look and see if any water is in it, change filter, and then do fuel preshure check at inj pump before you start truck. put guage on test fitting and just bump starter you should have 5-15 psi.
Lol startin fluid wont even start my truck. Iv tried. As for the lift pump pressure mines right at 15 psi. Its almost like trying to start a fourwheeler that has the run switch off thats on the left handlebar. If that makes sense to you.
do you have a 216 code on computer?
I don have a scanner and its not showin any codes when i turn the key on three times quickly. Not real sure if that works on 99s tho. All its showin is the check engine light.
As far as my truck, I have drain filter housing and changed filter, fuel presure never falls below 16 lbs. presure at pump is the same. I have never got a code to read a code, and unfortunatly i know about the death code.

sawman, could be that your return on your vp is sticking sometimes, the return banjo i think has a check ball in it and sometimes the spring in it sticks open letting the pressure bleed off, could be something to look at, its pretty cheap. other than that, the next time it does it i would instead of using eather crack the lines and see what you are getting for pressure out of the lines. my vp never threw a code when it died. just died. everyone says that they do but mine was siezed very tight when i took it off so im sure it was done lol. hope this helps some.
Turbo where is this check ball? I tried startin mine up a little while ago and it didnt but then i left it for about 10 minutes and it started right up like nothin was wrong. Still had the check engine light on tho. I killed it to plug a hole i forgot to plug and it wont start now. :dang:

crank sensor will cause this as well
where might that crank sensor be located mainman?
next to the starter on the block facing the tone ring of the crank
sounds like possible injection pump failure. Mine did this about 3 years ago and the only way I could get it to run was with ether (I know, I know). It would tun fine after it was running but cut it off and you had to use ether or pull it off. I replaced the injection pump and know mor problems. I was told all these other things that could cause it and none of those worked.:argh:

the crank senser is a pain to get to and can be a p[ain to get out. my truck was doing the same thing. it would crank and not start then start fine. ift was like i got air everytime it sat. when it did start it would rev then go to idle. check engine and all. i found a leaking injector. i dont know but might be the same thing

Cranked up was running. Bled brakes put it back on ground . Just turns over
I was bleeding brakes truck running. Got it off the jack went to start it right back up just turns over.
