Sounds more electronic then anything.Maybe someone will chime in here but I have very good problem solving with ..Parts for Dodge

Call him up with any ? and he has helped me out with the wierd stuff these trucks do.

Can you tell if the 4x4 engages?

24vcumminscowboy 01-02-2011 09:27 PM

ya 4x4 goes in i am having a problem with the hub bearing on the drivers side might be related

RAW 01-02-2011 09:33 PM

Kinda bout that. There are no locking hubs on these truck, manual or automatic. I'd be looking at wires on the front axle where the actuators are.

ya ill definitly check everything as soon as i can find a dry parking lot sucks not having a garage but thank you both for shedding some light on the subject:c:

Maybe some of this will help, it's out of my service manual:
INDICATOR DOES NOT ILLUMINATE WITH FOUR-WHEEL
DRIVE MODE SELECTED
(1) Disconnect and isolate the battery negative cable. Disconnect the engine wire harness connector for the four-wheel drive switch from the switch connector receptacle. Check for continuity between the ground circuit cavity of the engine wire harness connector for the four-wheel drive switch and a good ground. There should be continuity. If OK, go to Step
2. If not OK, repair the open ground circuit to ground (G100) as required.
(2) Reconnect the battery negative cable. Turn the ignition switch to the On position. Install a jumper wire between the 4WD switch sense circuit cavity of the engine wire harness connector for the four-wheel drive switch and a good ground. The four-wheel drive indicator should light. If OK, replace the faulty fourwheel drive switch. If not OK, go to Step 3. BR/BE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER 8J - 29
(3) Turn the ignition switch to the Off position. Disconnect and isolate the battery negative cable. Remove the instrument cluster from the instrument panel. Check for continuity between the 4WD switch sense circuit cavities of the instrument panel wire harness connector (Connector C2) for the instrument cluster and the engine wire harness connector for the four-wheel drive switch. There should be continuity. If OK, replace the faulty instrument cluster. If not OK, repair the open 4WD switch sense circuit between the instrument cluster and the four-wheel drive switch as required.

Sounds like it could be electrical as stated. Possibly a bad connection to the vacuum pump that locks in the 4X4. When my 4wd messed up I had a broken vacuum line. But I couldn't get mine into 4wd at all.

My truck is doing the same thing when its above freezing outside. When its below freezing it will never lock in 4wd. I have a new actuator in the glove box, but I have not got stuck yet so theres no motivation yet.

During warmer weather I unplugged the light indicator on the actuator, cleaned it, and reconnected it and that solved the problem for awhile, but I'm back in the same situation now.:scare2:

dont know about the dodge doing it but i do know others that water will freeze around connections causing issues

It takes 3 minutes to pull that swith from the rear of the front axle, passenger side. Use a 7/8 OE wrench. put it on the bench and with a continuity tester probe both contacts and look for continuity when the switch is depressed. I've seen everything from loose switces to loose vac moters to broken vac lines and wires. The next connector after the one on the switch itself is on the passener side behind the front bumber. The harness that carries it is attached to the bottom of the fan shroud. You'll typically find the problem around the front axle area though.

Ill second that! A lot of the time its just a bad actuator if its not going into 4 wheel, i like the cable actuator kits. But if the light just goes on and off you probably just have a bad connection on the sensor on the axle.

Im new at this, mine is doing the same thing, will engauge in the transfer case but front tires wont spin. My light on the dash comes on, so would my problem still more likely be the actuator?
