99 dodge cummins hard start when warm

Hope someone knows the problem. My dodge fires up perfect cold but i have to crank it for about 15 seconds when its hot. Thanks

do you have fuel pressure? this sounds like the vp is on it way out. when its warm, don't wait for the wts light to go out, just fire it right up. if it starts better, start saving for that vp.

thanks...fuel pressure is good...250000miles on pump....new pump cost more than i can afford right now

What IS the fuel pressure at wide open throttle? You have a fuel pressure guage installed in the cab??

Scan it for codes. Hard starts when warm is one of the signs of a bad VP-44.

When its warm and wont start pour some cold water on it. If it starts easy again, its the pump.

Thanks for the advice..fp at wot is 8psi..I have been reading other threads about vp 44 electronis going bad and how to replace an electronic part. There were no codes when i had it checked

Dr. Evil 01-01-2011 09:29 PM

They can die without throwing a code even with adequate fuel pressure

I have plenty of power, towing is no problem and accelleration is great even when engine is up to temp. Does this sound like an electronic problem in the vp44 to you.

this sounds more like a torn diaphram in the vp. like mentioned, if it starts fine with the two ideas above, (just crank it, don't wait for the wts and the cold water) i'd just wait until it finally dies. it will cost the same to fix now or later. it can run for a long time like this. jmo.

Thanks guys. The shop told me 1300 to replace the pump. Does this sound right. Can the pump just be rebuilt for less.Does anyone know someone that has rebuilt one themself. I saw a book/dvd set on ebay on how to rebuild your own. I appreciate all of your imput.
