vp44 help

i need some help on my 99 cummins last night i was backin up a hill and it just cut off so i checked to dct codes i had low fuel calibration so i cleared it then it ran i backed up agin and it cut off checked the code agin p1688 code of death now it want run the asd relay was buzzing on and off this mornin win a tryed it i got that to stop now the wait to start want come on and still want run

banditsdiesel 12-28-2010 11:03 PM

usually means the psg on the pump is going out. which cost almost what a new pump cost. and the shutting off will get worse wait till your on the interstate at about 80 and it shuts off. not fun. i would plan on a new pump soon.

jerad jones 12-28-2010 11:07 PM

it there a chance it could be a wiring issue it want even start now i ant had the truck but about a mouth and the pump was put on about 50xxx miles ago

banditsdiesel 12-28-2010 11:16 PM

a slight one maybe. if it killed after only 50k you may have a supply pump issue. that needs to be checked before you go any farther. and for it not starting when the pump goes out it wont kick the lift pump on at all.

Dr. Evil 12-28-2010 11:48 PM

Do you have a fuel pressure guage?

Sounds a lot like its time to buy a new VP-44. Although the wait to start light not coming on is somewhat confusing

NA I ANT GOT A GUAGE the boy i got it from had to chips stacked but i took them off and just ran the superchip sometimes i dont even here the sup pump now and the asd was makin a bussin sound now it ant im gettin air in my filter if i turn it over then pull the valve air would come out then fuel

Dr. Evil 12-30-2010 06:49 PM

If he had a couple of chips stacked and no fuel pressure gauge - you can just about bet that youre due for an injection pump and likely a lift pump as well.

Clear the code and see if it comes back.

jerad jones 12-31-2010 09:46 PM

i cleared the code got the wait to start back now i ant gettin power to my fuel pump i got 2 of the p1689 p0253 3 of the p1688 im goin to buy a in the tank pump tomorrow. i took it out ant jumped it it comes on but dont pick up fuel

jerad jones 01-03-2011 09:19 PM

the codes came back

dieselboy88 01-03-2011 10:17 PM

Not to sound rude but you need to go slap the ______ out of your buddy for stacking chips without a better fuel pump. Ill pray that your injector pump isn't bad for you cuz that's an expensive item to replace.

Do NOT waste your money on an intank pump - they are JUNK !! Does it already have a pump in the tank?

If you have P1688 code an it keeps coming back - you need a new VP-44 and probably a lift pump as well.

bobcat67 01-03-2011 10:57 PM

get an Airdog or FASS and then replace the injection pump, I personally like blue chip diesel for the VP-44 pump, I haven't had any personal experience with them, but I know people that have and those people don't have problems with their VP-44

jerad jones 01-06-2011 01:18 PM

ya it has a pump in the tank but im sure its the vp44 does any one no if it had the xzillerator chip on it if i will have any prob gettin a core on my old one. and what about the hot rod vp44s cause im goin to go ahead and order 150hp injectors and maybe a twin kit

Dr. Evil 01-06-2011 01:35 PM

Dont waste your $$ money on a Hot Rod pump. Many have and were disappointed. SO pump will work for you just fine, even with the 150 hp injectors.

I hope you are considering an upgraded lift lump.

jerad jones 01-12-2011 10:09 PM

o ya im am whats the best kind to get

smokinfire 01-13-2011 01:46 AM

Lift pump atleast 100GPH and that will more than likely come with upgraded 1/2" line, if and when you get the new VP, for the love of God, if you chip it, do not do the pump tap unless you got the money to replace it again because it voids the warrenty instanstly, and overheats the electronics over time, get a new fuel filter then a fuel gauge, and make sure you fuel doesn't drop below at least 15psi. i've replaced to VP pumps in the last year and a half, and the last one was still under the warrenty time, but i tapped it, and yea, no more warrenty :argh:

1999 CTD 01-13-2011 09:44 AM

get a lift pump! or u wont get any fuel to your vp44!:bat::tu: i got an airdog 150! it was an easy install and gr8 pump.

jerad jones 01-13-2011 09:28 PM

i had air in my lines cracked all six and got all the air finally out now it tries to crank but still want could the vp still be bad and not pushing enough fuel out

arobertson 01-21-2011 09:59 AM

stacking chips that ant compatable can cause other issuse like frying the ecm or the computer on your injector pump. never a good idea to stack. i agree go slap him lol. injector pump and a good lift pump not a intank one tho.

jerad jones 01-21-2011 02:46 PM

Jumping in with both feet,Get a fuel pressure gauge to.do you tow a 64mm may be a little big as a single for towing.:humm:

Dr. Evil 01-21-2011 04:07 PM

Great Jered - you cant go wrong with an Airdog 150 thats for sure

DieselWeasel 01-21-2011 04:21 PM

I have an Airdog also! Its AWESOME! You cant go wrong. They are expensive BUT well worth the piece of mind!!!

jerad jones 01-29-2011 03:41 PM

i got the all but the turbo. has any one had any prob with the air dog whistling loud just win i am buildin boost like its suckin air but i cant find nothin

DieselWeasel 01-29-2011 06:35 PM

They mine buzzes if thats what you want to call it... Just from it running. The only whistle i hear is turbo. Are you sure its the AirDog? How are you drawing fuel? Stock hose? Draw Straw? Sump? Maybe its running out of fuel because your drawing more fuel then you can supply.

jerad jones 01-29-2011 10:14 PM

draw straw and it buzzes but it also whistles louder the my turbo i think it is i have been checkin other stuff because i just put a body lift on it and had to shortin the intercooler hose but i made sure all of it was tight

DieselWeasel 01-29-2011 10:30 PM

I assume you mounted the LP under your feet? Thats where the sound is coming from? If its under the dash there is a TCB about that.... Its some stupid hose fitting that causes it to howl/whistle like wind past a door/window in a storm.
Did you replace all your lines with the blue stuff from AirDog?

jerad jones 01-29-2011 10:37 PM

ya its right under me and i used every thing the sent but my gauges ant came in yet so i have no idea what psi i am gettin and i dont want to mess it up if it ant gettin fuel like it should

DieselWeasel 01-29-2011 11:03 PM

Yeah that would be bad! You could go to autozone they sell a CRAPPY little gauge for like 10$ i use it right now. It either came with or i got at autozone a plastic pressure line kit. Hooked it all together and taped it to the dash board.
I am going to order the fuel pressure kit from Quadzilla soon so i can monitor it on my Quad instead of the dumb gauge!

As for the whistling, maybe you got a defective motor? It happens! I heard AirDog is great with warrenties.

I would pull filters and double check o rings just to be sure one didnt pop out of seat and let air in. You can lube them with oil so you know you get a good seal. Dont worry about getting oil in filter. The engine can burn it off no problem. Hell i run 2 stroke oil in my truck in summer!
