Dealer said no high idle.

So I took my truck to the dealership today to have the high idle turned on and to get my speedo recalibrated. I left with a sore ass and badd news.:moon: Shop guy says my truck doesnt have the high idle option. He said it had the 3 cylinder idle but he didnt turn it on. My speedo now shows 3 mph faster instead of 5 slower.:td: Sorry needed to vent. Is it true that my truck has no high idle.

Thanks

stodg73 12-08-2010 04:30 PM

The High idle is part of the software that Cummins put into the ecm, dodge did not use it. If someone near you has a SMARTY, all you have to do is upload any program onto your truck them return it to stock, and you will have the 3 cylinder and the high idle modes.

Dr. Evil 12-08-2010 04:33 PM

What he said, although the Smarty wont recal your speedo if you remove it.

94dizzyram 12-08-2010 04:46 PM

Can my local dealer enable the high idle. Or if he enables the 3 cylener idle will this also turn on the high idle. I dont know anyone with a smarty.

Uncle Bubba 12-08-2010 04:47 PM

Your dealer is a crackpot when it comes to diesels. But then again, most of em are. The high idle and three cylinder shuffle are all a part of the same update. Under a certain temp reading it locks out 3 cylinders and over that temp it only activates the high idle. Some place here on the site is a thread that tells exact temp ranges for each function and the flash number and info for the update.

stodg73 12-08-2010 04:49 PM

I think, the dealer should be able to turn on the 3 cylinder/high idle. It only works when certain parameters are met. The high idle will rev the engine to 1200 rpm at a certain temp., while the 3 cylinder idle will turn on when it is colder.

94dizzyram 12-08-2010 05:14 PM

I have to go back to get him to fix the speedo and when I do I will have him enable the 3 cylender idle and see if that works.

prison 12-08-2010 05:17 PM

could you just go to a cummins dealer? i dont know if they do trucks. just an idea. or buy a smarty. or buy a ford :w2: nobody hit me lol

94dizzyram 12-08-2010 05:22 PM

No cummins dealers nearby, and I dont really have a spare 600.00 for a smarty. No thanks on the ford offer, unless its got a cummins in it. :moon:

Farmboy 2.0 12-08-2010 05:33 PM

x3 you can do it with the smarty I had one in mine but i took it off and sold it. but i still have the high idle feature. Which is so nice

prison 12-08-2010 05:33 PM

i hear ya on the money thing that's effected a lot of what i've done with my truck. Then get a Fummins :tu: i'm just not a dodge guy. have you tried craigslist? if somebody's sellin a smart just go and "test it out" lol

94dizzyram 12-08-2010 05:46 PM

craigslist isnt a bad idea. I will do a little searching. I still got to go back to the dealer to get them to fix the speedo so hopefully they will be able to cut it on this time.

prison 12-08-2010 06:16 PM

in a perfect world the dodge dealer would be able to service your full dodge truck but they are a chrysler product. if they cant do everything definitely check out craigslist. good luck with your truck. i hope it works out for ya.

You dont need to go to the dealer - you can buy a True Speed calibrator.

i believe the dealer already did it and got it wrong if i read correct. and it sounds like money is and issue when the smarty was discussed so im not sure the speed calibrator would be an option

OP,

I do agree on the whole craigs list, or even in the classifieds. I found myself a Smarty for a good price. I saw about three of them when I was looking for one. It did take me awhile and I had to search to some outlying areas. My high idle kicked on today, before I started the truck my thermo was reading 19 degrees. I have a thermo that is stuck into my drivers A/C vent so during the summer I can monitor the A/C output. But anyways from what I have heard it maybe like 80-100 dollars for the dealer to do unless you got the hook up. If you do not have a code reader, then that is 80-100 bucks. So worst case there is 200 dollars, another 250 and you could have a used Smarty. Just throwing that out there, at least that is how I figured it so I could justify dropping the coin.

94dizzyram 12-09-2010 05:01 PM

it cost me 78 bucks at the dealer. Since I already paid that I think they should fix it. I am still going to try to find a cheap smarty though.

johnyb59 12-09-2010 07:35 PM

Take a look at this and print of the TSB. Take it with you to the dealer and tell them that they are phukin retarded.

dizzy,

78 is not bad, alot cheaper than what I had been qouted. I sure hope that they do you right and get it squared away for you.

All I had to do with my 6.4 was hook up the pto wire to one of my aux switches and whoo high idle. Is it possible you could put a togle switch in and wire something up? I have seen it done on a d-max.

Uncle Bubba 12-10-2010 12:01 AM

There is a schematic on the site here that was posted a few years ago on how to wire your truck up to have high idle and/or 3 cylinder shuffle with the flick of a switch.

PSD-BLACK-CLOUD 12-10-2010 12:09 AM

damn bubba is there anything stock left on your truck?

prison 12-10-2010 12:13 AM

haha not since he put in the shag carpeting

:jump:Yep, the Cummins Motor.:jump: I've worked hard to get rid of everything Dodge that I can. Fact is, this has been a farm truck since the day I bought it 11 years ago, well used and abused.

PSD-BLACK-CLOUD 12-10-2010 12:18 AM

Yea I actually really thought hard about dodge when I got mine but I got 2 lemons from them that were in the shop more than I drove them.

PSD-BLACK-CLOUD 12-10-2010 12:24 AM

not saying my 6.0's were any better though. but I am happy with my 6.4

DERAIL OVER! SORRY OP

94dizzyram 12-10-2010 07:15 PM

speedo is fixed. They got it to within 1mph. dealer tech also enabled the 3 cylender idle, which I assume will also enable the high idle feature. Thanks for all the info guys.

high idle came on this morning. pretty sweet. I figured out that if i plug it in at night the high idle wont come on. So if anyone goes to the dealer and they offer to turn on your 3 cylender idle, let them. It also enables your high idle.:tu:

Uncle Bubba 12-20-2010 07:42 PM

That's why the switch is nice. I have both the switch and the ECM mod. I kick on the high idle switch and drive around town with it on until the truck warms up.

COME ON

high idle all the time

hi i just got my 98.5 2500..
it seems to run high idle all the time...
what can i do...shouldnt it be at 800..when warm...
...
can my non dodge garage mech flash /open 3 cyl option..or
is the reprogramming of ecm only avail to a dodge dealer?

You have major issues here and need to start a new thread just for this your problem.

Sorry, I just saw this. Working on getting the info.

pnygaard 01-17-2011 11:21 PM

i have to apologize..
when i got the truck the other day.. i thought it was too thi idle ..
i since checked it and it runs cold start up at 850...
so not that bad after all..
sorry..

blue24valvecummins 02-02-2011 09:31 PM

the dealers are full of shit i went to a local chrysler dealer and they didn't know anything about a high idle so i had them hook up to my pickup to find it and it was like watching monkeys use tools so i drove 150 miles to the next chrysler dealer and 20 mins i was in and out and the high idle works great. so i went back to the 1st dealer and showed them the receipt :moon:

94dizzyram 02-03-2011 07:06 PM

I know what you mean. You pretty much have to find out how to do something online and then tell the tech what to do. It is sad. I think I am going to start saving for a smarty so I dont have to rely on the idiots.

Natedawg! 05-25-2011 01:18 AM

why would my truck go into high idle coming of the highway and its 70 degrees out? when i come of the highway it usally idles at 1200 almost everytime now?
