fuel gauge 98 dodge ram 2500

I have a 98 .5 dodge ram 2500 the fuel gauge goes to empty even if the tank is full
then sometimes it seems like it is working and the it goes back to empty again
any ideas of what it might be ?/

thanks

first thing that jumps in my mind is fuel sender in the tank. other things include: gauge cluster, and shorts somewhere.

i had that happen on a ford i owned, i never did figure out what was wrong but i would think it would be the sending unit

:argh:i just bought a 98 12v of a guy in TX, and it does it too, heck, he said it has been doing it since it was new. from what ive read, you have to lift the bed or drop the tank to switch out that sending unit. i just ignore it, it lies on the low side, not the high side.

Yea its a pita to go through all of that just to fix the sending unit, ill be doing it this weekend or maybe next weekend because it just drives me nuts sometimes haha.

Most of the time a guage not working is simply the sending unit. I know a lot of Chrysler vehicles are known for this. In my opinion it is easier just to take the bed off as long as you have a couple of buddies to help lift it. Its 8 bolts, tail light wiring harness, a ground strap to the body, and your filler neck.
