Finished Converting my Dually to a single wheel

6 Attachment(s)
Just wanted to share pics of how i changed it to a single wheel. It was not hard at all, just change the bed and take the front hubs off and put regular wheels on. People always told me that the rear wheels would stick out about an inch in both sides, they always have drum in the rear. I guess it made a difference from having disc in the rear beacuse i cant tell the difference.

From selling the old bed and wheels paid for the conversion.

Everyone asked WHY??? And i said because I WANT TO!!!!

Red_Rattler 05-07-2010 03:37 PM

Why?! :D Looks good! :tu:

96cummins06crd 05-07-2010 06:41 PM

ya but i bet that axel is way stronger

Smittyloopster 01-06-2012 08:18 AM

I too am about to do the same thing!! The question is how much do you get for you bed tires and adapters.

Smittyloopster 01-08-2012 10:20 AM

Found me a good bed last night. I am on my way to not having hips to deal with.:yeah:

Summers5.9 01-08-2012 01:26 PM

I've thought about doing this as well, do you gain MPG
or do you think it will stay the same

Smittyloopster 01-08-2012 02:43 PM

Everyone that I have Talked to say that it will be a little better. 4 wheels move easier that 6 wheels. :tu:

so how did you do that?... whats the steps?

Dodge Conversion for my 2001 3500

I also have a 2001 DODGE 3500 dually in which I desperately want to convert to a single wheel. I want to convert it without having to change the rear axle if I can. As for the bed are there options I can do? I can do a flat bed but I want a topper so replacing the bed with a used one can be expensive. I cannot afford to replace my truck and mine has only 94,000 miles on it. I am not a mechanic and although I can need some more details on the conversion. I am pretty sure I have drums in the back so how far will my wheels stick out?
Do the spacers in the front hubs need to be removed?
:scare2

Smittyloopster 11-17-2012 11:51 AM

The axle in the back does not need to be changed.. It is only 2" wider than a standard axle. You will never know the differance. The front adaptor is simpley bolted on and has the same lug bolt pattern. You remove it and put you new wheels on. The bed can be a used bed that's what I used. I would say try and find a diesel bed because if not you will have to buy a new fuel nozzle. The bed is attached to the frame by 8 bolts and the standard "single wheel" bed attaches in the same holes.. I had an 01 that I did the swap on its not to bad :tu:

Draugon 11-17-2012 12:29 PM

Thanks. This will make it easier and cheaper as I do not want to buy another axle. How much do you think a bed can cost?

Smittyloopster 11-17-2012 12:31 PM

It all depends I got mine for 350..

Draugon 11-17-2012 12:31 PM

As for the bed I know if you take the flares off the wheel well is larger and there are holes in it. Are there flare kits I can buy that will cover this or is it just better to get another bed?

Smittyloopster 11-17-2012 12:34 PM

Sold my bed for 1,000 and wheels tires and adapters for another 1,000

---AutoMerged DoublePost---

Get another bed... Or you will be filling 24 holes a 4" hole where the fuel nozzle comes through then buying fender flares

Draugon 11-17-2012 12:34 PM

350 is cheap. My truck is also white so that will make it easier. When you said that the axle is 2 inches wider is that on 2 inches on each side or combined?

Smittyloopster 11-17-2012 12:36 PM

Get another bed

Draugon 11-17-2012 12:36 PM

My bed is in perfect shape so I should get close to that. Thanks for your help. You willing to answer more questions later?

Smittyloopster 11-17-2012 12:38 PM

Each side. Look at the pictures above he didn't change his axle either

---AutoMerged DoublePost---

Ok and yes

blacksally 11-18-2012 12:20 PM

i wanna make mine dually!!!! anyone have the front wheel adpaters and i heard you can just use dually wheel on the rear of a single wheel?

wyocoyote 05-19-2013 12:48 PM

I may do the same thing on my flatbed, will be easier i suppose.
I will be doing this for better performance in snow, and for the potential for better mpg.
I guess I'll save some bucks on tires, I know I'll lose the ability to tow some big ass things, but thats not what this 2002 4x4 2500 manual 5 speed diesel flatbed will be used for anymore.
MY QUESTION TO YOU: HAS YOUR MPG REALLY BECOME Much BETTER given similar driving situations your conversion is the perfect test case if you have done no other odds. Blind me with your science. There is a similar thread where I will be posting my results. search my handle for further updates.

wyocoyote 07-08-2013 11:18 PM

3500 that is, now trying to figure if there is a way I can use my dually wheels as singles on the back.
Remove the spacers up front and use them on the back with no inner tires perhaps?

I want to go to a single in the rear too but I want to keep the dually bed. I want one big tire and rim. Anybody seen this before?

If the back wheels will stick out more could you put wheel spacers on the front to make it match the back?

It's only an inch on each side. You will never know it. Trust me.
