2001 cummins fast idle
So the other day it was cold in the morning and i didnt have my truck plugged in. So when i went out to start it and i let it run for about 30 seconds and made sure there was oil pressure. I ran it up to 1000 rpm for about 45 seconds and then let out and it went back to normal idle speed and went back in the house. A couple minutes later it idle up to 1200 rpm and i went out and stepped on the brake pedal and it went back to normal. Then it did it again alittle later. I know the 3rd gens have this feature from the factory. But i didnt know that the second gens had this too is anyone familar with what im talking about? Sry for the long post

How long have you had the truck? Its possible there was a Smarty on it at some point (which would leave the high idle), or its have been flashed with updates at a dealer.
Nothing to worry about - its a good thing. Info about it is here: http://dodgeram.info/tsb/2001/18-019-01.htm |
Yeah i was excited when it did it. Ive hade the truck since 2006 or so. I dont think it ever had a smarty on it it was a one owner before i got it. They said it was never souped up. And ive never had it to the dealer. But i did try a smarty out the a few weeks ago for about an hour would that do it?

Yes thats what did it. When you remove the Smarty, the performance mods go away but this feature stays.

x2 on What the good Dr. says:tu: I don't know if it will ever get cold enough but you will also have the 3cyl warm up:tu:

I had new software installed into my ECM from a factory dealer. It will rev upto about 1100 RPM when it is cool out, and a few times it has done the 3cyl. warm up. Sounds pretty weird, but works very well.
