Help! My automatic transmission is stuck in first gear!
I have a 1999 Dodge 250 5.9 l automatic with 60,000 miles. the transmission is stuck in first gear and no upshifting. Is this a easy fix? Or a complete overhaul? I haven't towed anything, don't use 4 wheel drive yet, so far babied it and it has had just leisure driving. Should this have happened with so little miles? Any help is appreciated.

well, i wouldn't think so with low miles but ya never know. sounds like to me the valve body or the throttle cable is out of adjustment. good luck

Does it doe this no matter what throttle level?
|
i don't understand about throttle level
|
Does it ever shift into 2nd?
|
hold the truck to the floor and see if the safety shift will hit when it maxes out

no

This happened to me with my 04 3500 around 2 months ago...on the first highway run while the truck wasn't warmed up fully it would shift, but if i had stopped then started to drive again on the highway while the truck and trans was warm it just wouldn't shift no matter what..time after time. So after the dealer trying to figure it out they finally found out it was the trans "solenoid" kit which was making it lock up so to speak and not allowing it to shift up. Not saying it's that...just a possibility :humm:
Also, i only have around 123,000 miles. It also didn't matter what throttle level really, i could've been flooring it or driving faster than normal, below normal, or just normal but it still wouldn't shift |
do you live where theres salt on the roads i found a plug on the rear of the trans. that i first thought was for the overdrive but it turned out it locks the trans into low gear and wont let it shift look and see if that connector is bad first. it would be on teh drivers side of the trans toward the back.

First off so you can drive the truck, disconnect the big round plug on the drivers side of the tranny by all the linkage. This will give you third gear starts if you pull the shifter to 1st you will have 2nd, bad thing is no overdrive. Then go by a speed sensor, which is located drivers side tail area of the tranny before the transfer case. Your 1-2 shift is electronic so if its not getting a speed then it doesn't know when to shift because it takes throttle % and speed to give you your 1-2 shift. Give that a shot and let us know what happens.
