New to the diesel world, and lookin for info.

Hello im one of the newbies and naturally i have questions. I have owned two dodge rams one with a 4.7 and one with the 5.7 hemi and loved both so i decided to up grade. I recently bought a 2005 with the 5.9 cummins w/101,00 miles, but not sure if what the truck is doing is normal or not. When i start it cold the volt meter reads below normal and if the headlights are on they dim and brighten several times until the volt meter reads normal. Also if i depress the accelorator and release it the engine continues to gain rpms and while deaccelorating the rpms pulsate until idle. Is this normal for a diesel or do i have a few problems ? Any info would be helpful, Thanks.

the 1st part of your question is your grid heater cycling on and off heating the incoming air to your intake and im not exactly sure on the second but if its anything like the cat engines i've worked on its in a warmup mode until your engine reaches a certain temp :humm:

well i was thinking it had somethin to do with initial start up when its cold cause its the only time it does it. twice now it has actually killed the power to the aftermarket cd/dvd player that the pryor owner installed. thats got me just confused.

if you post this in the correct forum you will get a lot more help. This is the 98.5-02 section But the accelerator thing is normal. My dads does it all the freaking time. And the other issue is grid heater. Your truck should have high idle to warm up in the morning and eliminate that if you let it warm up.

My 99 does the same thing... As stated above the Cummins does NOT use glow plugs to heat the combustion chamber. Rather they use a grid heater to warm thin intake air. It continues to run until the intake reaches a specific temp OR you drive over 15mph, if i recall correctly. The idle surge could be due to the cold air and grid heater coming on or being off.... Diesels don't idle at low RPM well when cold. The 24v isb has "high idle" and "3 cyl idle" that can be turned on by dealer or anyone with a SMARTY. You can see if this is an option for you too!
