tire size

i have a 2002 dodge ram 3500 4x4 i was wondering if anyone knew how big of a tire i can go with before they would cause a problem with rubbing stock size is 235 85R16E i would like to go with something a little taller and wider but yet keep the load range E...thanks

psy_6att_6ica_6 03-01-2010 03:58 AM

i got 315x75r16s on mine. i do have a leveling kit, but i have a HEAVY bumper wich bring it back down to about stock. i havent had any problems. the 285's i had before that were great too

Gear Poet 03-01-2010 04:52 AM

I'm in the market for a new set of tires. Currently have 235-85R 16's, too. Just want to make sure -

According to the tire calculators I use, 315-75R 16's add one and a half inches to the width per tire. So figuring tire-squat for load (more of that with an extra inch and a half of sidewall), there's going to be two inches less space between the tires mounted on the rear rims. That seems pretty close, even with the larger offset of the '02 rims.

the 315's do not clear very well. even with a leveling kit my 315's hit. I went to 285 75 16 and they fit perfect

285/75/16 will fit fine without a leveling kit. thats what i am running.

I just went down this road this week actually. I had Toyo Open Country ATs, size LT305/70R16s. They worked really well and no rubbing at all with a 2" leveler on the front.

This morning, I just had my local Les Schwab mount up some Toyo Open Country MTs, size LT315/70R16s on the same MT Classic II 16x8 wheels.

They rubbed the fenders a little exiting the parking lot at full lock but still seems like they'll work out just fine. The rubbing is really quite minor. Also, both of these particular tires are E-range tires.

Wheel back spacing is a major contributing factor on the WILL THEY FIT topic

thanks for the info so far, im leaning towards 285/75R16's but not sure yet lets see some pictures of some 3500 4x4s with that size tire also my buddy has 305/75R16s on his 2500 lets see some pics guys thanks.....:tu:

Probably didn't explain myself well.

The problem for 3500 duallies is not going to be hitting the fenders - or if so, it's going to be relatively minor.

The problem for 3500 duallies is going to be the space between the rear tires mounted on the dual rims on each side of the axle (called "offset spacing" iirc). The 285's, 305's, and 315's have wider treads and sidewalls, and as the tire "squats" while going over bumps, the sidewalls may rub together - the problem will only be worse if you carry loads. Leveling kits won't help - only the 3500 dually has this issue, and it's a serious one that requires people to check for wear rings on their sidewalls. In many states you can be pulled over and ticketed if the LEO notices your sidewalls seem to rub. Better to get a ticket, however, than have a sidewall blowout at 60 mph while towing a 30 foot trailer.

So if you think it's about how a tire looks or whether it rubs a fender - that's a 2500 issue. The 3500s require a different "set of rules".

The '00-'02 3500s have a wider wheel offset that previous 3500s, so only 2nd gen 3500s from those years can run sizes larger than 235-85R 16 without issues. But not much larger. I thought we were asking a different question - how big & wide a tire can be before sidewall rubbing between the rear tires became a problem. When I got out of this game a few years back, 235-85R 16 was the only "E" option in town....

yeah i unerstand that they will rub i am planning on buying spacers...thanks i want to see some duallies with bigger tires...:tu:

mopar26287 03-02-2010 07:58 AM

i have had an 06 and my new 07 cummins 2500 and i ran 35-12/50-17's and the only place they rubbed was the controll arms in a tight bind but other than that no issues

Dr. Evil 03-02-2010 08:22 AM

Interesting but not related at all to second gens. Sheetmetal is different between second and third gens.

i have a leveling kit on my truck and my 305s fit perfect. i put a 315 on it and at full lock it hit the fenderwell so i would go either 285s or 305s with a leveler :tu:

o and thats on a 16inch rim the size is 305 75 16

Gear Poet 03-02-2010 09:36 AM

Let's try it this way. :)

Has anyone mounted 315 or 285 75R-16 E's on an '00 to '02 3500 without resorting to rear wheel spacers? (Wheel spacers aren't a great idea for carrying or towing heavy loads.) If so, how do they fit the offset spacing on the dual wheels?

Thanks.

dieselsmoke74 03-02-2010 12:44 PM

i want to see some pictures of 24 valve duallys with 285 75R16 or 305s or 315s so i can see what it looks like on the truck thanks guys

Blue01cummins 03-02-2010 07:33 PM

i had 315s on my truck with a 2" leveling kit and they would rub quiet a bit on the control arms i have a friend who did wheel spacers and has no problem with rub.. i still have the leveling kit on my truck with a 285/75 now and they rub on hard turns. i have a quad cab long bed truck idk if there is any turning difference.

Gear Poet 03-04-2010 09:47 AM

Answered my own question with the help of local tire shop yesterday. Like all along - without wheel spacers - 235/85-16 is as large as you can go on a pre-'00 3500 dually - 255/85-16 is as large as you can go on a '00 to '02 3500 dually. There are several choices in 255/85-16 E - including a serious off-road tire. But not many.

315's & 285's 75-16 will rub sidewalls with load squat.

smokin texas goat 03-08-2010 02:11 PM

The duallys look pretty sick with the 285's on them, They're almost like a giant slick

dieselsmoke74 03-08-2010 10:25 PM

thats what i hear i was hoping someone would post a picture of one on here so i could see!

biged681985 03-08-2010 11:00 PM

sorry man, i aint got any pics. but i will be putting some 285's on my buddys flat bed here in a few months, but he is using spacers to account for the difference

dieselsmoke74 03-09-2010 10:36 PM

i will be using 2 inch spacers if i decide to put 285's on also!

1999 Sport Cummins 03-10-2010 10:03 AM

i have 315/75/r16 and they dont rub n mine at all but like said earlier thats not the problem. Get a leveling kit and 2in spacers n the back and you should be fine. I know a guy that hae 315s on a ford dually n it did just fine. but i dont know how heavy of a load you are pulling but...personally i would put 305s on it to be safe
