transfer case

so i was on a recent trip to virgina hauling my car to sell it to a friend and weather got mad in the mountains and i had to use four wheel drive( my tires are about bald) and my transfer case on the way home started making a noise like two pieces of metal grinding together.. but it is in 4 high now 4 low.. any ideas?? my friend who was with me says he thinks it is a bearing ... any help would be greatly appreciated

well thanks for your help this week i will try the u joints and see what happens
where is the bearing at in the transfer case or are there a whole bunch of them?

There is definitely more than one, you need at least 2 per shaft. Minimum 2 hafts per t-case, main shaft and front output shaft. You'll have to take it apart to find it, if it is a bearing.

great.... sounds like fun..is this a pretty common thing?

RAW 02-28-2010 09:29 AM

Well, it happens. Not to sure about common. Just like everything else it all depends on how it is used, and serviced. 307,000 Kms on my truck, T-Case untouched. I change the fluid every 50,00 Kms though, and 4x4 is rarely used.

Yes Check your u joints. i just blew up my t-case.:ouch: all because of u joints. i heard a popping when 4 x4 was in and neglected to crawl under to check what it was. a 15 dollar part is costing me 1500 now. :argh:i blew the whole case in two. was driving down the highway when i vibration started and got worse. well befor a icould make it home to crawl under and check she wwent down.
