Hard to start below 30.

Since I got my 02 it's near inpossible to start when not plugged in if its below 30 degrees. Replaced the intake heater and relay. It cycles like its supposed to and gets hot to the touch. The truck had 28,000 miles on the clock in June 07 when I got it and now has 88,000 miles.

Mine too. Part of it just comes with the climate. Definitely in the temp range that its time to start plugging in.

You can minimize the potential problems by running Amsoil. I'd also recommend using a good Cetane booster and make sure you periodically run through some quality injector cleaner. Also make sure you have a clean fuel filter and monitor your LP pressure closely.

Well the reason I am confused is the 97 and the 99 I used to have Would fire right up when it was 30 below and not plugged it. I have a fass, so fuel press is not a worry. The injectors are less than 6 months old and the inj pump was replaced june 08.

Sounds like you got some crappy fuel. Try adding a double shot of cetane boost.

I thought that cetane was bad to put in the ol truck

How so? I've been running cetane booster in my rig for five consecutive winters and find that my truck responds really well to it.

na thats cool i remember reading somthing some were on this sit talking about how it can be bad bec. it raises somthing and or decreases somthing in the fuel or hell i dont know tthere was just a big discusion oon how it could hurt the motor but hell i actually just put some injector cleaner that has cetane in it like a day ago i think the brand is diesel kleen it comes in a gray container. hell i dont even know what cetane is so can some one school me thanks

Are your batteries old?

30* should be no trouble at all to fire the truck. Plugging it in at that warm of a temp is really just a waste of electricity IMO. I normally plug mine in if it's going to be well below zero.

NCFPD 12-03-2009 04:03 AM

yea you might have some bad batts. or some loose conections either way somethings not right you shouldnt have to plug it in till you start getting down around 10 deg. or so thats when i plug myn in

Need to be a little more specific next time. A hard start issue could be caused by many things. If you mentioned it cranks over real slow, fuel wouldn't be part of it. Clean all the connections on the batteries and ground points on the block. Charge the batteries overnight, then load test them individually in the morning. If they test good, could be the starter causing the issue. :tu:
