oil leaking from crank case breather tube.

i have a 98.5 3500. the truck is leaking oil from the crank case breather on the back of the motor. when i run the truck normally it barely leaks. actualy its a small drip about 16 seconds apart. when im pulling my trailer it dumps out. the other night i went about 400 miles and went through four gallons. a few people said its a broken ring. the only reason i am questioning the thought of a broken ring is the fact that the truck runs perfect. no smoke, no performance loss, nothing out of the ordinary in the drive or idle except the oil dumping out. anyone else experience this? anyone have any suggestions before i have the motor ripped apart?

sounds like to much cranck case pressure could be blowby

NCFPD 11-21-2009 11:09 PM

I would say blow by i dont have a breather on myn it has a screw on cap that are sometimes found on the 12v but every once in awhile if i worki it hard i will get some blow off not much but some

would it be ok to route that crankcase breather back into the intake? you know, like the gassers do. i realize you would have to go after the grid heaters, or delete them. anyone opinions?

take out a freeze plug and re routre it back into the motor. just read around on here there have been trucks on fire just cause a little oil leak from the turbo so dont mess with the grid heaters. and 4 gall of oil in 400 miles all going into the intake:humm:
is there any way you checked your coolent to make sure you dont have a leak back into the motor and causing to much fluid in the motor so its blowing it out?? Im not really 100% sure what it could be with just the info iv heard. but dont run it into your intake:c:

Welcome to Diesel bombers! Thanks for the resurfacing of the asphalt on the interstate!! four gallons is a lot.I would suggest a compression test.

im with Jet. get a compression test and also check for exessive blow by from oil filler cap

What crank case breather on the back of the motor?

The 98.5 has the breather on the front of the motor on teh timing cover.

NCFPD 11-23-2009 11:47 AM

i have a tube on my 98.5 back on the side of my 24v right around the stock lift pump and it leaks oil like a blow by not much but some

If you have a 24V and the crank case vents anyplace then right down the front of the bock somebody has cutomized somethin or your lookin at the wrong parts here. From the factory the blowby comes out of a round cap about 1 inch deep and approx 3 inches across with a tube comin out the bottom of it right on the front of the timing gear cover behind the fan and drains straight down a tube that is attached to it.

If you went through 4 gallons in that few a miles and this really is oil leaking out of the blowby, odds are pretty good that motor is done and ready for rebuild. If it's got that much pressure it should also be blowin the dipstick out to.
