K & N Air Filter Cleaner

What else can I use to clean my K&N air filter? I have about 4 bottles of the oil, but the cleaner gets used faster than the oil. I am sick of buying the 20 dollar kits

12vcummins96 10-28-2009 01:34 PM

windex:U:

Captn_tyler 10-28-2009 01:38 PM

HA... I knew it smelt like somthin

Dr. Evil 10-28-2009 01:41 PM

I would not use Windex - Simple Green.

Don't clean it. I haven't cleaned mine in probably 70,000 dusty trail miles and the filter minder still hasn't budged and my truck doesn't smoke at all and all that tells me it's still gettin plenty of air. If you look at my filter you won't even see pleates any more cause of all the crap packed in there. If you read through the K&N site it tells ya that they even use the debris for extra filtration, they're made to run dirty.

Personally I think most of the problems people have with these filters is that they pay them to much attention and over clean and oil them. When i changed my oil the other day, I have to pull the air filter and intake tube to get to the oil filter off, I just took a screwdriver and scraped some of the crud out. In my world it's cleaned now.

Ha that pretty funny. But in my bosses world there are rules, Oil to be changed every 2800 miles with Fram oil filter and delo 400 40wt., air filter to be cleaned and oiled, and air freshener to be changed use only PINE

defenitly some truth to this, this applies to pleated air conditioning felters as well, as the dirt sticks it increases the filtration to a point. a pressure drop gauge will tell the real time to change out the filter, but not sure of the quality of the dodge filter minder. Ed

2800 miles, Fram Filter. Is he crazy. Why drive a diesel if your gonna change gallons of oil every 2800 miles, your killin any cost advantage the diesel may be givin ya. And Fram filter, they are the worst on the market, it's like filterin your oil with a cardboard box. They have been responsible for many a engines bein rebuilt.

RAW 10-29-2009 08:19 AM

I have heard the same about Fram filters, and stopped using them. The nice thing about Fram was the grippy bottom on them, no filter wrench required taking them on, or off. I now run Deere filters on my truck. Working for the dealership cuts the cost, plus they are a damn good looking filter. I have cut one open to see there construction, and it looks great.

Another filter that I will NEVER EVER run is WiX. Keep that crap away from me. Others may like them, but after cutting oil and fuel filters apart, there is no way I will ever run one on my rig.

midnite><og 10-29-2009 08:27 AM

i clean mine every other oil change... granted i have a gasser, so my oil changes are about every 4k... mine remains trictly street, even so its pretty dirty. the cleaner does go fast than the oil.... maybe some car soap and water? bleach?

recked13 10-29-2009 10:10 AM

Find a harley dealer, my local dealer sells the K&N Filter cleaner by itself in a 32 oz. spray bottle all by itself for about 15 bucks.

Captn_tyler 10-29-2009 10:25 AM

I dont know about this man, I run baldwin filters and change the oil every 6 months on our tugboats and thats more the okay. But with the trucks, it is what it is i guess. I could go on and on about it but I am done argueing. I might just change the filters to Baldwins next time I get a filter order together.

Thanks recked13, I will look into that.

Uncle Bubba 10-29-2009 11:08 AM

Actually thinkin back I can't remember if it was in the owners manual for my truck or the warranty info but in one of those it actually stated that the use Fram oil filters would void your warranty. Mentioned that brand directly by name.

Dr. Evil 10-29-2009 11:48 AM

Yup:

TSB 09-004-01

Dodge had to retract that becaus ethey were going to get their asses sued oof. But yeah, Fram is complete junk dont use them. Fleetguard Stratapore LF3894 is the best filter you can use on a Cummins.

RAW 10-29-2009 09:33 PM

How is that proven?

Dr. Evil 10-30-2009 01:19 PM

Weve switched from air filters to oil filters...

I would imagine DC did engine overhauls under warranty and they have evidence of Fram filters coming apart. Why would that be so hard to prove? Pay attention to thses words: "lodge in the piston cooling nozzle" Dead easy if you ask me. Cut a Fram oil filter apart and tell me what you see.

sledwrecker 10-30-2009 10:23 PM

Wow, talk about a rabbit trail, guy asks what he can use to clean his K&N and now it' a full blown assault on Fram. I personally like the vanillaroma over the pine though:U:

Captn_tyler 10-30-2009 10:26 PM

Haha, yeah this thread went places, I personally dont use Fram after photos I saw. But hey rules are rules. I ended up using simple green. Thanks guys

As for air filters I use a BHAF... Mine currently is 5 years old and has over 107K miles and it and never needs washing, never need oiling, never needs anything... Just run it... I stuck my filter minder in it and so far the minder has moved. But you can test the minder by sucking on the nipple (keep mind out of the gutter!) and you'll see the disc slide down. But all in all for $40 buck for a BHAF from Vulcan Performance I've never had to change it yet. I got a new one in the box waiting for the old one to quit...

As for the oil filters I be a true fleetguard fan myself but... This last oil change I did have one on had so I used a NAPA (Wix) filter. But I got 2 new fleetgaurds on the shelf now.:U:

Uncle Bubba 10-31-2009 06:32 PM

Our local Cummins Dealer isn't a factory shop, it's locally owned and all they sell is Wix. I don't know good or bad on em myself but I always order in the Fleetguard filters.
