valves
 

I have a 01 dodge 3500. I need some help with my valves, i have never adjusted valves on a car. I have on a 4-wheeler though. I would imagine it would be somewhat the same. Can anyone give me some advice? How long will this take me? Thanks any info would be nice.:U:

Took me a couple hours, but I've done valve adjustments many times. For me, the two hardest parts were: 1. Getting the valve cover off (it won't come straight up, you have to raise it a little, then scoot it to the side, then bring it forward). and - 2. Reaching the rearmost valves! That's one LOOOONG engine!
There are articles including pictures on some sites, I've never looked for one here. If you Google "Cummins valve adjustment" you'll find at least one.
BTW, some will recommend checking the valve lash more often, but he interval for checking the valves in the factory service manual is 150,000 miles! I checked my '99 when it hit 150,000 miles, and only 1 valve set was out of tolerance. Also note, the tolerances are enormous!
I also bought a new valve cover gasket, which didn't need to be replaced (but of course I DID replace it, since I didn't want to leave it hanging on the wall for years.)

Make sure the motor is on TDC and start on #1 cylinder and alternate-Intake #1, exhaust #2, intake #3, exhaust #4, and so on after you get through that you rotate the engine 180 degrees and start over in opposite exhaust#1, intake #2, exhaust #3 and so on. you will need to get a feeler guage and the tolerances are intake 10-exhaust 20. Hope this helps

That's good stuff. I wish someone would make a video doing this. I don't know all of the nuts and bolts, so some of it is confusing. For the most part, that link with the steps and circles is outstanding.

Once you get the hang of it , It wont take ya 30 minutes!
On the valve cover issue, Push the heater hoses down, pick the cover up and slide over the hoses. Slides right out. It's also a good time to check all the rockers, make sure the black clips are on them and make sure the rockers move freely. Also check the push rods, make sure they look good. IF YOU PULL THE PUSH ROD make SURE it's correctly seated before you put it back on the rocker ball!
Also make sure you adjust em cold!

just got done adjusting the valves it wasnet so bad. I took my time and looked over everything twice. The hardest part was the #6 cyl, but still not bad. Took me about an hour. Just wanted to say thanks for the info again. :U:
